Why was the punishments used in Puritan society To make sure everybody was following the rules and kept in their place, And to get others to learn a lesson from the people that actually commit crimes and not do what they do or they might be just like them.

Stocks And Pillory Stocks was the most common form of punishment made of two heavy wooden planks with holes cut out, to hold the ankles and wrists. Pillory was designed to hold the criminal while standing. This was probably used for when people steal or lie or something.

Letter Wearing What criminals would wear to represent their crimes, like if they was drunk in public they would wear a D seen on their clothes in be humiliated in public. Like for example in the scarlet letter Hester Prynne had to wear the A on her chest to stand for adultery and be shamed in public.

The Ducking Stool Was reserved for wives who were deemed disrespectful to their husbands and known for gossip. A plank of wood balanced at the central location like a sea saw, a stool was strapped to the end of the plank where the woman would be tied and placed over water the judge gets to decide how man dunks she gets based on level of offense.

Whipping/Brutal Punishment A grave offense, whipping would be inflicted. Most people will receive 20-40 lashes, the highest recorded was 117. And if you was to create a heinous crime like speaking against their religion because that was really a sensitive thing to them you will have a hot awl gouged through your tongue and most cases might have one of your body parts cut off like your ears.

Execution For the most serious offenders like if you committed adultery even if only one witness would speak against the defendant you will still get executed and the most common form of execution will be hanging the person but some people were burned at stake.
