2. Intro I want to show footage of racism in America to convey a depressed, melancholy attitude in the audience therefore when Martin embarks on his phenomenal campaign it will really portray him as a truly heroic character. The footage used should show the contrast in life for black and white people and will show how white people treated people at the time of MLK’s birth.

3. Childhood and school At the age of five, Martin Luther King Jr. began school at Yonge Street Elementary School in Atlanta. This, however, was before the legal school entrance age of six therefore Martin was not allowed to continue his education until he turned six years old. After his education at Yonge Street Elementary School, he attended David T. Howard Elementary School. He also attended the Atlanta University Laboratory School and Booker T. Washington High School. He scored so high on his college entrance exam at Booker High School that he did not formally finish high school, he went on to college in his junior year of high school.

7. End of bus segregation How did Rosa Parks influence Martin? When Martin Luther King, Jr. heard that Mrs. Parks had been arrested, he called a meeting at his church. A huge crowd gathered to hear what he had to say. People wanted things to change, but they were afraid. They did not want to be arrested or attacked. People shrugged their shoulders and said there was nothing they could do. It was just the way things were. MLK believed there was something they could do. They could boycott. They could refuse to ride the buses. That would cost the city a lot of money. The city and bus officials would not like that. On the morning of December 5th, not everyone, but many people of colour refused to ride the bus. They walked. They rode mules. Those few people with cars acted as a shuttle service, taking others to work and wherever they needed to go. It took a long time for the boycott to work. It took 381 days. This should be said by the presenter over a re-enactment of the boycott by a group of actors.

8. I have a dream speech 1963 and how the bible influenced him. Martin Luther King’s speech was influenced by the Christian ideas of love your neighbour a he strongly stated everyone was equal, he also said in his speech; ‘ black and white children shouldn’t be judged by the colour of their skin but the content of their character.’ He was also influenced by love your enemies and those who are different to you, this was showed by his saying; ‘sons of slaves and sons of slave owners should one day be able to sit down at the table of brotherhood.’ This should be shown by actors acting out the scenes he is quoting and a narrator speaking over the performance. 2 minutes.

Civil rights act 1964 An act to enforce the constitutional right to vote, to confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States of America to provide injunctive relief against discrimination in public accommodations, to authorize the Attorney General to institute suits to protect constitutional rights in public facilities and public education, to extend the Commission on Civil Rights, to prevent discrimination in federally assisted programs, to establish a Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity, and for other purposes. Civil rights act The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, colour, religion, sex or national origin, is considered one of the crowning legislative achievements of the civil rights movement. First proposed by President John F. Kennedy, it survived strong opposition from southern members of Congress and was then signed into law by Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson. In subsequent years, Congress expanded the act and also passed additional legislation aimed at bringing equality to African Americans, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Voting rights act 1965 The Voting Rights Act, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson (1908-73) on August 6, 1965, aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the 15th Amendment (1870) to the Constitution of the United States. The act significantly widened the franchise and is considered among the most far-reaching pieces of civil rights legislation in U.S. history. Click on the image below to watch a video on the topic.
