Today’s Sermon: Mark 15:22-57: “The Crucifixion of Jesus” by Pastor Jim Bomkamp

Last week’s msg: 1. We discussed the Roman trial that Jesus was given before Pontius Pilate, Herod, and then Pilate again. 2. We analazed the man, Pontius Pilate, who was governor over Judea and had the opportunity to make a difference and save the life of Jesus yet chose instead to placate the Jewish leaders and allow them to crucify Jesus.

Today’s msg: 1. Jesus is going to be crucified by the Roman soldiers at Pilate’s direction. 2. We are going to talk about crucifixion. 3. We will discuss on what day Jesus was crucified? 4. We will discuss what Jesus was experiencing when He cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?” 5. We will discuss the women who followed Jesus.

About crucifixion…

What day did Jesus die?

Mark 15:22: Jesus is brought to Golgatha to be crucified

Mark 15:23: They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh

Mark 15:24: They crucified Him and gambled for His garments (Psalm 22:18 is fulfilled)

Mark 15:25: Mark says Jesus was crucified at the 3 rd hour [The days began at sunrise for the Jews, 12am for the Romans-thus John 19:14 mentions 9am for crucifixion ]

Mark 15:26: Inscription on the cross, “The King of the Jews”

Mark 15:27-28: Jesus is crucified with two robbers (Isaiah 53:9, and also 53:12 are fulfilled )

Mark 15:29-30: Passersby hurl abuse at Him

Mark 15:31-32: The chief priests, scribes, and even the thieves hurl abuse at and mock Jesus

Mark 15:33: Darkness falls over the land

Mark 15:34-35: Quoting Psalm 22:1, Jesus cries out, “My God, My God, Why have You forsaken Me?”

Was Jesus really separated from the Father?

Jesus’ 7 utterances on the cross: 1. “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do,” Luke 23:34. 2. “Today thou shalt be with Me in Paradise,” Luke 23:43. 3. “Woman, behold thy son... Behold thy mother,” John 19:26. 4. “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me?” Matt. 27:46, Mark 15:34. 5. “I thirst,” John 19:28. 6. “It is finished,” John 19:30. 7. “Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit,” Luke 23:46.

Mark 15:33: Beginning at the 6 th hour darkness falls over the whole land for 3 hours

Was Jesus actually separated from God?

Arguments for Him just pointing to Psalm 22: 1. If sin separates one from God, how does God ever reach him? 2. How could Jesus ever have been separated from the Father?

Arguments for Him being separated: 1. Isaiah 59:2 shows that sin causes a separation. 2. Psalm 22 that Jesus quotes speaks specifically of His suffering, so how could verse 1 about separation not apply? 3. This prayer is the only one in which Jesus does not address God as Father (‘Abba’). 4. Jesus ‘cried out’ this phrase. 5. Did the 3 hours of darkness occur because God could not look on His Son?

Mark 15:36: Someone gave Jesus some sour wine

Mark 15:37: Jesus dies…

Mark 15:38: The veil in the temple is rent in two (See Hebrews 9:3-12; 10:19-23)

Other phenomenon occurred…

Mark 15:39: the centurion confession

Mark 40-41: The women who followed Him are looking on

Mark 42-43: Joseph of Arimathea asks Pilate for Jesus’ body so he can give Him a proper burial

Mark 15:44-47: Pilate allows Joseph to take Jesus’ body away, and Jesus is placed in the tomb

CONCLUSIONS: He died for us so that we might live with Him: 1 Thessalonians 5:8-10: “But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.”
