1 Integers

2 Integers Integers are positive (+) and negative(-) numbers.
Negative Integers represent a loss or a decrease. (Ex. -5, -18, -345, ...) Positive Integers represent a gain or an increase. ( Ex. +3, +25, +467, ...)

3 Positive Integers + 25 +6 +3 +5
Emmit Smith gained 25 yards on his last play. The elevator went up 6 floors. The level of the pool water rose 3 inches after the big rain. The babies weight increased 5 lbs. in the first two months. +6 +3 +5

4 Negative Integers -12 Clarisse lost 12 pounds on her diet.
Jack walked down 6 floors in his apartment building. The temperature on Saturday decreased 10 degrees after the storm. -6 -10

5 Label each either positive or negative…
Profit of $ ) Increase of 9 yards Win $ ) Withdraw $40 Decrease of 6 degrees 11) Spend $15 Rise of 8 degrees 12) Minus 9 inches Earn $ ) Back/backwards 4 yards Lose 3 lbs 14) Deposit $ 80 Fall in price of $ ) Bonus of $50 Plus 20 pounds 16) Gain of 15 yards + 5 + 9 + 10 - 40 - 6 - 15 + 8 - 9 + 12 - 4 - 3 + 80 -25 + 50 + 20 + 15

6 -3 and +3 are opposites because they are both 3 units from zero
Opposite Integers 3 units 3 units -3 +3 Integers that are the same distance from zero are OPPOSITE integers. -3 and +3 are opposites because they are both 3 units from zero

7 Absolute Value I 2 I = I - 4 I =
The absolute value of a number tells how far an integer is from zero. The symbol for absolute value is I I I 2 I = I - 4 I = 2 units from zero 4 units from zero

8 Absolute Value Find the absolute value of : I - 25 I I 43 I I - 768 I
Find the absolute value of : I - 25 I I 43 I I I = 768 = 25 = 43

9 Let's fill out our Foldable!

11 Comparing Positive Integers are like money you have.
The higher the positive number the richer you are. Negative Integers are like money you owe. The higher the negative number the poorer you are

12 Integers on a Number Lin e
smaller bigger Which is greater? or +2 Which is greater? +5 or +3 Which is smaller? -4 or -10 Which is smaller? -6 or 0 Positives are always greater than negatives.

13 Opposites Positive integers have an opposite Negative integer. Opposites are the same distance from 0 on the number line in opposite directions. Ex. opposite of _______ opposite of _______ opposite of _______ opposite of _______ +16 -4 +67 -35

14 Order The number line can also help you put integers in order.
If the numbers are written down as they would appear on the number line, they will be in order from least to greatest. Order from least to greatest.

15 How did you do? -7, -4, -2, 0, +1, +5, +6 Good Job!!!!!
