3 The aim of the Chief Heritage is to: Establish new arts and heritage institutions and recast existing monuments and histories Promote and establish conversation bodies by proclaiming new heritage institutions that redress neglected histories Promoting heritage preservation in South Africa by providing support and funding to organisations that preserve and promote heritage. Management and oversight of the South African Geographical Names Council and development of an authoritative database of geographical names

6 Living/Intangible Cultural Heritage Indigenous music and oral history programme  Collection  Conservation  Promotion  Dissemination Strategic Partnership with universities  Venda  Fort Hare  Zululand Recently submitted business plan September – launching of the Indigenous Music &Oral History Roll-Out Strategy Draft convention for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage

7 SAGNU Nine provincial structures established and functioning Publication for distribution in all nine provincial structures  Handbook  Leaflet – in all 11 languages  Annual report  Exhibition material that can be taken to provinces, conferences etc. Backlog of more than 57000 names identified for review  Divided by provinces  Given to provincial structures for consultation and processing

8  South African Geographical names database (sagnu.dac.gov.za) established to facilitate the process of approving names therefore we can now:  Manage and monitor the progress  Capture new names  Retrieve information easily for reports  Improve co-ordination and reduce duplication  Spatial representation of names  Remote updating and online approval  Access existing gazetters online  Survey of latitude/longitude  Automatic feedback/reporting to application

9 SOUTH AFRICAN GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES DATABASE (SAGNU.DAC.GOV.ZA) ESTABLISHED TO FACILITATE THE PROCESS OF APPROVING NAMES THEREFORE WE CAN NOW:  Manage and monitor the progress  Capture new names  Retrieve information easily for reports  Improve co-ordination and reduce duplication  Spatial representation of names  Remote updating and online approval  Access existing gazetters online  Survey of latitude/longitude  Automatic feedback/reporting to application
