6 COMMUNITY What is a community? A place where people live, work, play, and go to school Tell me about your community… 10 min.

7 Discussion How do people and communities help each other? Why are there jobs and businesses in a community?

8 JOB What is a job? A type of work for which a person is usually paid 10 min.

9 What is a business? Places that make or sell things we need or want. What is a citizen? People who live in a community. What is a need? Something people must have to live. What is a want? Something people would like to have? What is a skill? Being able to do something well.

10 Activity – Job Cards What type of work do your family members do? What would you like to do when you grow up? How would this job help your community?

11 Activity – Lily’s story Step 1 Please stand as I read a story. Perform the following actions when you hear the words like, good at, or job. like or liked = clap hands good at = show your muscles job or jobs = (say) ding, ding, ding

13 Activity – Job Cards Step 2 – JA Our Communities Poster Pick a card. Examine your card and share with a neighbor. Discussion: What does this person do? Why do we need this type of worker in our community? Would you like to do this work? Why or why not?

14 Activity – Job Cards Step 2 – JA Our Communities Poster Please come up and find your worker on the poster by matching the numbers.

15 Activity - Tic-Tac-Toe, Three Jobs in a Row! Sit in a circle in your group. Place 9 of your Job Cards on the floor in a 3x3 grid pattern. I will read aloud 1-2 facts from any job card. If you have the matching job card, place your game piece on it. The first group to get three Job Cards in a row - vertically, horizontally, or diagonally - wins the round!

20 Introduction Do you like donuts? Have any of you ever made donuts? Would you like to know how they are made?

21 Key Terms What is a business? Places that make or sell goods or services we need or want. What is a good? Any kind of product that a business makes or sells. What is a service? Work done for others, such as haircuts or car repairs

22 Key Terms What is a product? Something that is made to sell. What does it mean to produce something? Produce is another word for make. What is production? The act of making something?

23 Activity - Sweet “O” Donut Production 1.PREPARE: Separate each donut from the sticker sheet. 2.MIX: Place 3 ingredient stickers on the back of each donut. 3.FLAVOR each donut by coloring the center. 4.CHECK your work.

24 Competition - Sweet “O” Donut Production When I say START: As a team, produce as many well-made donuts as you can within 3 minutes. Donuts must pass inspection. –Neat –3 Ingredient Stickers –Colored in the center for flavor

29 Activity - Innovation To increase sales, the baker at Sweet “O” Donuts has asked us to think of a new kind of donut to sell. Be creative!

30 Activity - Innovation 1.Turn to Page 4 in your Junior Journal. 2.Draw a picture of a new kind of donut. 3.Share your ideas with the class.

31 Activity - Innovation Discussion: Which donut would you buy? How much would you be willing to pay? How does the bakery earn the money to pay its workers?

37 Discussion What can you buy at these businesses? How do these businesses help the community? Do you know someone who works in businesses like these? Would you like to work for one of these businesses someday? Why or why not?

39 How Does a Community Work? Worksheets Place business stickers on your worksheet in the correct place. Complete as many matches as you can in 5 minutes. Choose a business Name the goods and services this business provides What are some skills a worker would need to work here?

40 Activity – Payday Step 1 The donuts you produced at our last lesson were sold, allowing you to be paid! Step 2 You will explore a new job. Read the skills and duties on your Job Card and share with your neighbor.

41 The community has a problem! Last night, some of the donuts were stolen from Sweet “O” Donuts! Who will you call to report this break in? A fire broke out in the kitchen! Who should we call to put out the fire?

42 Government & Taxes Does the donut shop pay money to a police officer or firefighter for helping them? How do we pay these workers?

43 What is government? Groups of people who manage our cities, states, and nation. What are taxes? Money that people and businesses pay for government goods and services.

44 Government & Taxes Police officers and firefighters are examples of government workers. All citizens and businesses pay taxes in order to pay these workers. Taxes are collected by the government.

45 Activity – Government Workers Step 1 If you have a Job Card with a blue border, please come forward. Each worker will share what their job is. Step 2 Heads down! Step 3 Match each student with their government job from memory.

46 Tax Collector Please pay the Tax Collector $2.

47 Summary and Review Who pays taxes? What does the government do with the taxes that people pay? What services do government workers provide?

54 Activity – Decision-Making & Voting Sweet “O” Donuts has donated $500 to your school! The baker has requested that this money be used to start a “Keep Our School Beautiful!” program. We must decide as a class how to spend this $500.

55 Activity – Decision-Making & Voting Step 1 What is the decision I have to make? Step 2 What are my choices? Choice 1: Recycle bottles, cans, and paper Choice 2: Create art to display. Choice 3: Plant a butterfly garden.

66 Key Terms What is money? Coins and paper bills made by the government. What is a bank or credit union? A business that keeps money safe and lends money to people and businesses.

67 Money In the United States, there are 6 coins we use for money. How much money is each coin worth? How much is a dollar bill worth? How do people use and spend money?

68 Activity – Money Matchup Game In pairs: 1.Tear apart game cards. 2.Place cards face down. 3.Take turns flipping over two cards at a time. 4.If you make a match, remove these cards and take another turn. 5.The player who makes the most matches wins the round.
