Daily and Seasonal Weather Changes Lesson 22

What is weather?

Weather is the condition of the outside air or temperature at a particular time or place.

Weather is always changing.

How do meteorologists forecast the weather?

Weather forecasting is a prediction of what the weather will be like in an hour, tomorrow, or next week.

Weather forecasting involves a combination of computer models, observations, and a knowledge of trends and patterns.

By using these methods, reasonably accurate forecasts can be made up to seven days in advance.

Weather can change from day to day, and can change hourly in some instances.

Many factors are measured to describe and predict weather conditions.

The Elements which effect weather are: Air temperatureAir pressure

HumidityWind

Clouds or fogPrecipitation

Meteorologist will measure these elements to determine what weather we will have.

What are some basic weather instruments used to measure weather?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac p2AWpB93w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac p2AWpB93w Let’s learn about some of the weather tools meteorologist use.

A Thermometer measures air temperature.

An anemometer measures wind speed. One type is made of cups that catch the wind.

As wind blows the cups, they spin. The dial on the anemometer shows the wind speed.

A barometer measures air pressure. It tells whether the pressure is rising or falling.

Rising pressure (high pressure) means it will be sunny and dry. Falling pressure (low pressure) means there will be precipitation.

Rain gauge measures how much rain has fallen over a period of time.

A weather vane lets you know the direction of the wind.

Is weather and climate the same thing?

No. Climate is the weather of a particular area over a long period of time, not just a particular day.

There are different climate zones all over the world.

The main differences between different climate zones is precipitation and temperature.

Those two things make the plant and animal life of that particular climate different.

Climate is the overall weather pattern of those two elements over time.

Weather changes day to day, but climate deals with the big picture.

Watching the weather changes day to day gives us clues to the future.

By collecting and comparing daily weather data you can begin to predict the likelihood of a particular weather condition occurring.

Why don’t you try recording the weather in your area. Keep records of the air temperature, types of clouds, types of precipitation and if the wind was strong or light each day.

Make a weather chart and keep recording your observations for a month. Do you see any patterns in the weather?

If you recorded your observations over a year you would start to see trends. You would see how the seasons effect the weather.

Weather is always changing, which makes weather a fun subject to study.

Let’s review what we have learned about weather. Answer the attached questions on the worksheet entitled L#22 Daily and seasonal weather changes.

In our next lesson we will learn about pressure systems and fronts.

Good Job Today! And remember to….

See you next time!
