Thank you for the kind feedback. I truly do hope you have enjoyed the course and have had a good learning experience. Most people said they found the course useful or interesting. “…not too hard, or boring, or painful…” “…you kept me awake because you relate the material to real life…” “I looked forward to coming each day.” I have really enjoyed this class this semester. It has been enjoyable for me because there are a number of people that add input to the course discussions and we have had some interesting discussions. I like that many of you seem to be genuinely interested in learning.

People liked to hear the real-life examples and hear how real-life things related to the course topics. People liked having the slides and study guides available before class. People liked the marketing plan or the assignments (to earn points in the course). Five or six people had positive mentions about the Twitter comments. “I like the homework assignments because I liked the opportunity to observe in the real world the concepts I was studying.”

More opportunities for extra points because I’m not comfortable speaking in class (related to tweets). I understand your reluctance but I would also say that if you are not comfortable talking in front of others you should work on that. This class should be a pretty easy way to do that in a non-threatening way. Powerpoints are too vague. I have over time shortened my Powerpoints substantially. There was a time when I might go over 25 or more slides in a class now I generally have 6 or 7. I have lost some detail in doing so, but I have done this in direct response to this feedback that previously stated I was just reading the textbook to the students given the level of detail. The right amount for any student is different for each student but I am trying to find the best mix to accommodate the most people. A review day before the tests. If I do this it would require 4 more days of class which would mean hurrying through information. I am pretty much required to cover all the topics I currently cover.

A couple people said more class discussion and real world (advertising) examples. As I have incorporated more marketing plan activities it has taken time that in the past I used for other things. Some people mentioned more activities in class or too much lecture. I am incorporating more activities into the course but I would like to do more. Unfortunately given the topics that I am required to cover it does not leave much time flexibility. Additionally some students mentioned more detailed overheads so this would conflict with that. Group marketing plans. I have contemplated doing it in groups because it would make it easier on me, but I am very afraid that it will cause more schedule problems for the students and then may result in some people coasting through and not really learning. More group work in general. I have also looked for places to do this, but unfortunately by relating the assignments to the marketing plan it really limits my opportunities to do group assignments. If I add it in addition to the marketing plan assignments then I would be covering less on the slides.

Almost everyone liked it because it was interesting or made them really think about marketing. Some liked that it allowed them to be creative. A couple said they didn’t like it because it was a little overwhelming. A couple said make it worth more of your grade. Someone said make it 3 parts. I generally like that idea. I actually do it in 5 parts in more detail for the marketing capstone class that I teach. The biggest negative here for more parts is simply the time spent grading given the large size of the course. I wish we taught this course in 30 people sections and then I would do more parts.

Almost everyone was positive on the assignments. Generally people said they were easy points and made you think about the materials. Someone mentioned doing group assignments related directly to the subject just discussed. In most cases the assignments were about the material we had just finished. Sometime the homework assignments were not. I am contemplating doing all in-class assignments in the future. Thoughts?

Again, I thank you very much for the feedback of the course. I really take teaching seriously and try hard to make my classes useful, informative, and not too boring. That’s not always easy and unfortunately it is difficult to design a course that provides everyone across many different majors (Marketing, Concrete Management, PR, Advertising, Business Administration, etc.) with exactly what they want. It is often difficult because I don’t know what everyone’s starting point of knowledge is. Even with this difficulty I personally very much look forward to the diverse group of students in this course. I particularly enjoy it when I have a lively class (like this) that likes to discuss concepts from these different points of view. If there is something I can do to help any of you again, please let me know.
