MU15L2D21 Measuring to the Nearest Tenth Unit 15, Lesson 2, Day 2

MU15L2D2 2 DPP H Solve the problems using mental math, base- ten pieces, or shorthand.

MU15L2D2 3 Math Vocabulary Review common fraction; fraction – any fraction that is written with a numerator and denominator that are whole numbers. For example, 3/4 and 9/4 are both common fractions. decimal fraction; decimal – A fraction written as a decimal. For example, 0.75 and 9.4 are decimal fractions and 75/100 and 4/10 are called common fractions.

MU15L2D2 4 Math Vocabulary Review hundredth – there are one hundred hundredths in a one tenth there are ten tenths in a one

MU15L2D2 5 Math Vocabulary nearest tenth of a centimeter – this is the tenth of a centimeter that is closest to the end of whatever you are measuring

MU15L2D2 6 Essential Question How close do measurements have to be?

MU15L2D2 7 Teacher Notes – Part 2 Measure Hunt Lead a class discussion about estimating length. Hold up a pencil and ask students to estimate its length and width.  Is the width less than 2 cm. or more than 2 cm.?  Is the pencil longer than 5 cm? longer than 20 cm?

MU15L2D2 8 Teacher Notes – Part 2 Measure Hunt Pose similar questions for:  teacher scissors  a large paper clip  a small index card

MU15L2D2 9 Teacher Notes – Part 2 Measure Hunt Students will work in teams of three. Each student of the team must find an object to measure that is less than 2 cm. Each student of the team must find an object to measure that is between 5 and 10 cm. Each student of the team must find an object that is between 20 and 30 cm. Each student of the team must find an object that is between 110 and 130 cm.

MU15L2D2 10 Teacher Notes – Part 2 Measure Hunt DAB Pg. 239 Students record their data for Measure Hunt in the tables provided on the activity page. In the column “Which way?” students should describe what they actually measured on an object.

MU15L2D2 11 Teacher Notes – Part 2 Measure Hunt DAB Pg. 239 For example, if a student measures a desk, the student should record whether he or she measured the length, width or height. After the teams finish, challenge them by asking to which category a square-inch tile belongs.

MU15L2D2 12 Math Vocabulary Review common fraction; fraction – any fraction that is written with a numerator and denominator that are whole numbers.
