Researchers are investigating how to use data from these devices to detect depression, sleep disorders, and other present or impending illnesses.

4. THE CENTER FOR DATA INNOVATION | DATAINNOVATION.ORG SAFETY University of Utah electrical engineers have developed a network of wireless sensors that can detect a person falling. One in three older adults falls each year. In 2010, this accounted for 2.3 million visits to emergency rooms and $30 billion in medical costs. A 2008 study showed 80 percent of elderly adults who owned call buttons did not use the device when they had a serious fall.

Watson Research Center, have developed software that can correctly differentiate between patients at risk of developing psychosis and those not at risk, with 100 percent accuracy, by analyzing their speech. The United States spends $100 billion on health care expenses due to poor medication adherence.

7. THE CENTER FOR DATA INNOVATION | DATAINNOVATION.ORG INDEPENDENCE Engineers from Georgia Tech have developed Cody, a robotic nurse that is gentle enough to bathe elderly patients. Cody has the ability to be operated by the patient and told what part of the body to clean, using a laser range finder and a camera. Other experimental robots can act as a butler or cook for patients in the home.

THE CENTER FOR DATA INNOVATION | DATAINNOVATION.ORG INDEPENDENCE Lively is a system composed of activity sensors placed on objects around the home that monitors the daily behavior of an individual living alone. Sensors may be placed on a refrigerator door, a pill box, and car keys to collect data on an individual’s eating, medication, and sleep habits.

Using a free smartphone application called Parker, the new system gives motorists real- time information and availability for accessible parking spaces in select areas throughout campus.

10. THE CENTER FOR DATA INNOVATION | DATAINNOVATION.ORG CONVENIENCE San Francisco Airport is testing out 300 location-aware beacons to help visually- impaired people navigate its newest terminal. For the visually impaired, the system uses Apple's Voiceover technology to read out points of interest as they come on screen.

THE CENTER FOR DATA INNOVATION | DATAINNOVATION.ORG CONVENIENCE Products like LeChal and SuperShoes can wirelessly connect to a user’s smartphone’s navigation app and detect when a step is taken to notify the wearer about directions, such as by vibrating the left shoe when it is time to turn left. This technology is particularly useful for those who can neither see nor hear and thus cannot rely on audio directions to get where they are going.

12. THE CENTER FOR DATA INNOVATION | DATAINNOVATION.ORG CONVENIENCE The Amazon Echo is a smart device that acts as a hands-free virtual assistant in the home. Microsoft Kinect allows users to control a computer with gestures.

13. THE CENTER FOR DATA INNOVATION | DATAINNOVATION.ORG CONVENIENCE The home automation company Nest Labs produces thermostats, smoke and carbon dioxide detectors, and security cameras. The company’s products use sensors to learn automatically about its users’ habits and make adjustments accordingly.
