The 6th Commandment We’ve all attended weddings before, either of a family member or a friend. During the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom make specific promises to each other.

The 6th Commandment As we study the 6th commandment, we’ll see how fitting it is to make those promises in the wedding service.

The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man.“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

Matthew 19:3-6 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?“ "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,‘ and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

What should marriage be? (Matthew 19:5-6) and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

What gifts come from marriage? (Genesis 2:18) The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

What should marriage be? (Romans 7:2) For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.

What gifts come from marriage? (Psalm 127:3) Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.

What should marriage be? (1 Thessalonians 4:4-5) that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;

Why do we say it’s sinful for couples to live together instead of getting married?

How do people ruin marriage? (Genesis 2:18) The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (1 Thessalonians 4:4-5) that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;

How do people ruin marriage? (Hebrews 13:4) Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

How do people ruin marriage? (Matthew 19:9) I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.” (Romans 7:2) For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.

2. In every divorce sin is present. In two situations, however, there is Scriptural allowance that a divorce is permissible.

a. Adultery Matthew 19:9 -- I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."

1 Corinthians 7:15 -- But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. b. Malicious Desertion  The desertion does not have to be a physical leaving. It is a desertion of the marriage.  The desertion is of such a nature that it marks the person as an unbeliever.

How do people sin against the 6 th commandment? (1 Corinthians 7:9) But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

How do people sin against the 6 th commandment? (Matthew 5:27-28) “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

How do people sin against the 6 th commandment? (Romans 1:26-27) Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Ephesians 5:3-4 -- But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. All course joking

How can we honor the 6 th commandment? (Proverbs 1:10) My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

How can we honor the 6 th commandment? (Ephesians 5:33) However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
