A by-schools-for-schools programme Supports schools to share, jointly- develop and embed good practice in global learning through the creation of school networks Supported by access to high quality training and resources Aims to engage with 50% of schools in Wales by 2017 2

4 © Crown Copyright 2013 What do we want the GLP-W to do? Help children and young people understand their role in a globally interdependent world and explore ways by which they can make it more just and sustainable Familiarise pupils with the concepts of interdependence, development and globalisation Stimulate critical thinking about global issues, both at a whole school and pupil level Help schools promote greater awareness of global poverty and how it can be reduced Enable teachers to explore new and alternative ways of teaching about development and sustainability in the classroom. 3

5 © Crown Copyright 2013 Programme Structure 4 Lead Schools recruit and develop Network Schools for a two-year cycle Schools assess practice through completing the ‘Global Learning Self Evaluation (GLSE)’ GLSE automatically generates Next Steps and can be used to measure progress over time Lead School Network Schools Coordination and leadership of Network Schools and sharing of best practice Sharing of practice, ideas, resources and networking

7 © Crown Copyright 2013 6 Network Cycle Network Schools complete their GLSEs (1) and share Next Steps with the Lead School Having identified areas for focus and considering the use of GLP-W “approved providers” (2) and GLP-W “network materials” (3), the Lead School works with their network to create an Action Plan (4) After three sessions of working as a Network, the Lead School completes a report (5) outlining progress made and reviews the action plan Two more network sessions are then held before all schools revisit the GLSE to assess impact and the Lead School submits their final report GLP-W Network materials

8 © Crown Copyright 2013 Support for Network Sessions Approved GLP-W Providers - Accredited NGOs, Charities, GLP-W partners who can provide input/training for teachers at network meetings - Support linked to the Mapping Tool - If charges are incurred, these can be covered from the Lead School grant Resources for Network meetings - Developed by the GLP-W team - Linked to the Mapping Tool - Focussed on teaching resources and discussion between network members 7

9 Global learning in Wales GLP-W links to Wales’ educational priorities in a number of ways: Estyn and Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC) Context for developing Literacy and Numeracy skills Link to Welsh Baccalaureate Preparing for Donaldson, Sharing of effective practice and professional networking PLCs It’s fun and a great motivator for pupils 8

10 ESDGC Review – June 2014 9 Schools should : improve pupils’ understanding of the more complex ESDGC concepts; plan for the progressive development of pupils’ understanding of ESDGC across the curriculum, and assess and track pupils’ development; plan for ESDGC to make a positive contribution to developing pupils’ literacy and numeracy; provide a variety of extra-curricular opportunities to support ESDGC; identify members of staff to have responsibility for co- ordinating and developing ESDGC across the school; provide appropriate training for teachers and other staff to help them to deliver ESDGC more effectively, including its more complex concepts;

11 Preparation for the Welsh Baccalaureate 10 Global Citizen Challenge: - Pupils need to develop the required skills through all stages of education - Assessed on “Learning Outcomes” - Critical Thinking, Creativity and Innovation, Literacy and understanding of the issues.

12 © Crown Copyright 2013 Donaldson “ Successful Futures” Curriculum Review One of the 4 purposes of the curriculum in Wales will be that children and young people develop as: ethical and informed citizens of Wales and the world ‘Our children and young people need to be rooted in their own cultures and to have a strong sense of identity as citizens of Wales, the United Kingdom, Europe and the wider world. Engaged citizenship requires the kind of understanding of democracy, human rights, interdependence, sustainability and social justice that should inform their personal views and sense of commitment. Children and young people need an ability to deal with difficult and contested ethical issues… 11

14 What about the wider importance of global learning……? Practical: 75% of board- and director-level executives and CEOs think that “we are in danger of being left behind by emerging countries unless young people learn to think more globally” The Global Skills Gap. (2011) Think Global and British Council Personal: Social responsibility Cultural, racial and religious respect Empathetic and rights aware Prepared for a more sustainable future 13
