3 Anderson 2013 Obstacles and Challenges for Male Survivors  Men are less likely to report, disclose, and/or discuss histories of sexual abuse than females because of stigma, shame, and traditional masculine stereotypes.  Males who do disclose can take 20 years or more to come forward.  Many men minimize the experience of being abused  Males who are abused by females often believe it was not abuse.  Masculine culture and creates strong disincentives for men to disclose  Oftentimes men who do come forward are told that  men can’t be raped  a man is supposed to defend himself/is at fault for being abused  there are no resources for males  they are at greater risk to perpetrate because they have been abused

4 General guidelines for healing

5  “Being a victim is not a mental illness, it is an awful life circumstance” Dr. Howard Krieger  There is NO hierarchy of abuse.  Severity of harm is not gauged by the abuse acts externally, rather by the severity of harm that is perceived by the survivor themselves.  Healing takes great courage and persistence  Healing is a process, not a race or a competition—especially important for men to hear--pacing is very important; taking breaks is necessary  Very important to help survivors give themselves credit for any steps they have taken to get to this point  Very important to honor all the defenses a survivor has used to cope until now.  There is BIG Difference between JUSTICE and HEALING Anderson Fradkin, 2013

6  Sharing our stories is key. “Flaking off the shame”  Safety always comes first  Trust must be earned  “Who are you?” Not “What are you?”  “What happened?” Not “What did you do?”  Survivors must be empowered to have choices throughout treatment  Repetition, Repetition, Repetition. And practice, lots of practice.  Healing cannot happen in isolation Anderson 2013 General guidelines for healing
