Boosting a Car Battery Cables should have sufficient length (12-16-ft) with #6 gage stranded wire and well-designed clips. Follow the proper sequence of events in connecting the cables to a car with a discharged (dead) battery.

Boosting a Car Battery Protective eye equipment is recommended. First find the battery on both cars. On most cars the battery is in the engine compartment. This is not always the case anymore. When the battery has been relocated the manufacturer usually installs boosting nuts close to the engine These are usually covered by Black and Red plastic covers

Boosting a Car Battery Most batteries have either lead posts on top or side mounting points

Boosting a Car Battery Identify which terminal is positive and which terminal is negative, this should be marked by a – (negative) or + (positive) sign on the battery. On batteries with top posts the positive terminal should have a larger diameter Connect the red clip (wire) to the positive terminal of the discharged battery making sure that the black lead is not touching the negative terminal or the car.

Boosting a Car Battery Connect the black clip to the negative boosting point (preferred) or negative terminal of the fully charged battery and the other black clip to the negative boosting point (preferred) or negative terminal of the discharged battery Have someone maintain a constant idle speed on the car with the good battery. Start the car with the dead battery

Boosting a Car Battery It is advised to let the charging action of the running car occur for 10 to 15 minutes before starting the car with the discharged battery. This is to protect the battery of the car with the good battery After 10 to 15 minutes start the car that has the dead battery

Boosting a Car Battery Disconnecting the cables from the jumped car once it is running. Remove the cables in the reverse order as they were connected, making sure that the clamps don’t accidentally come in contact with the battery or the chassis of the cars.
