The Thinking and Experience in Qatar Considerations Looking Ahead

Future Trends and Opportunities Traditionally we look at technology trends and consider the implications and opportunities – Wearables (communication and navigation) – Drones (eCommerce and Access) – Driverless Cars (Personal Mobility) At the heart of this approach is can we do what we do now – differently - better

But the real opportunity lies elsewhere Access to knowledge and communication lies in the “transformation of data” That input and output can be differentiated Our experience includes – Text to Speech – Speech to text – Text to symbols – Text to braille But this is just a start

Transformation of Data New transformations are emerging – Automated Voice recognition of Video – Text to sign language and vice versa – Facial recognition (Facebook) – Location based services – Image to text – Google photos etc – Movement or actions to Data

Planning for Access Planning for access must be participative How is this achieved in a city with access barriers ? – Buildings – Transport – Information materials No strong history of civil society for people with a disability

eParticipation eForum ePoll eConsultation eTownHall Social Listening Analysis linked to User profiles

Accessibility 2025 Our challenge is not to apply current thinking to 2025 But to anticipate the definition of access in the decade ahead The history of access is one of chasing trends constantly seeking to bridge the new digital divides that emerge

Accessibility 2025 and Beyond Disruptive Technologies – Transport, Delivery, Distribution Smart Homes – Connected at multiple levels Home Automation – Monitor adjust and control Use of Robotics and advances in prosthetics Environmental Automation Increasingly accessibility is less about reaction and accommodation and more about pro-action and prediction

And beyond Do we need to question our approaches to accessibility ? Do we know the direction that will most likely ensure Access for All ? Does Universal Design need to become more inclusive – language, culture and community needs ? What is the balance of standards, policy and research ? Where do we invest ?
