Objective To demonstrate control over the uses of various kinds of subjects, predicates, and complements by identifying them. CCSS – Language Standard 7.L.1 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. 7.L.3 – Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

When you ask a question, you invert (reverse) the order of the subject and verb. You always use a helping verb and a main verb in a question, but you separate the helping verb from the main verb with the noun. Natural and Inverted Order

These are questions that can be answered by “yes” or “no” You did feed Willie his dinner. Did you feed Willie his dinner? Will Mr. Bradish teach English today? Mr. Bradish will teach English today. Lunch will be delayed today because of the visitor’s speech. Will lunch be delayed today because of the visitor’s speech?

These are information questions. Why is Willie on the table? What does he think is on the table? When did he jump up there? Would you have taken Willie down from there? Could he have gotten down by himself? When the information question uses two helping verbs, put the subject after the first helping verb.

When you give an order, an imperative sentence, the “you” is understood and does not appear in the sentence. The sentence starts with the verb. (“You” is put in parenthesis when diagramming.)

Practice p. 304 #1-5
