2 Paris is divided into 20 districts called arrondissements. They are arranged in the form of a snail. Six arrondissements are on the left bank of the Seine river. Fourteen are on the right bank. The river in Paris is called the Seine. In the middle of La Seine are two islands: Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis.

3 Le Métro The most used transportation by Parisians is the underground railway, also known as the Métro. There are 14 métro lines and 5 suburban train lines, called RER.

4 There are over 300 métro stations in Paris. The metro was created in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle (World Fair). Most of the stations were designed by Hector Guimard in the style of Art Nouveau.

10 A famous singer who lived in Paris is Edith Piaf. She is considered by many as being the best French singer ever. Her song “La vie en rose” has been remade hundreds of times and has appeared in many movies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= 8IJzYAda1wA

11 Moulin Rouge Le Moulin Rouge is the most famous cabaret in Paris. It was created in 1889. It is known as being the spiritual birthplace of can-can. It is located in Montmartre, home of main artists of the time. Toulouse-Lautrec was a famous regular customer of the cabaret.

12 Moulin Rouge= Red Windmill Windmills because in Montmartre, up until the beginning of the 20 th century, there were over 300 windmills. Only two remain today

13 Saint Denis Montmartre means “Mountain of the Martyr” because of Saint Denis, a bishop of Paris who was beheaded in the area of Montmartre. He is said to have picked up his head and walked 10 kilometers after he lost his head.

14 Le Sacré-Coeur Is a church that was built in 1870 and is at the top the hill of Montmartre.

15 Sacré Coeur Always stay white because of the stone that was used. When it rains the stone becomes whiter! Did you know that gargoyles on cathedrales are used as rain gutters and also to ward off the evil spirits.

16 Place du Tertre Is a square in Montmartre where artists come to sell their work. You can buy paintings or have someone do a painting of you. Its also great for sitting in a café that surrounds the square and people watching or check out some of the souvenir shops.

17 You can access the top of the hill by using the stairs or the Funiculaire (a little cablecar). Montmartre is famous for its narrow streets and its street painters.
