3 Canadian Space-based Assets RADARSAT series –Active sensor – ideal for polar imaging activities –Flexible imaging configuration – high and low res., narrow and synoptic coverage, land and water surface –High frequency of revisit –VERY RICH Polar archive (North and South) Other assets –Scisat –Anik F2 Envisat ASAR and Meris – within the data policy framework as agreed with ESA

4 RADARSAT 1 In operation since 1996 – confirmed continued operations until 2009 Demonstrated potential for routine polar observation (world-wide ice services, Arctic and Antarctic missions) Archive collected over both polar regions (>250,000 images over the Arctic)

5 RADARSAT 2 Ensured data continuation + enhanced modes until 2012 Canadian government data allocation available for International Science Projects

6 RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) 3 satellites – C-Band, dual-pol operations, quad-pol exp.,multiple swaths and resolution available –Increased imaging frequency for polar regions – up to 4 time/day –Increasing operational use –Improving system reliability

8 SCISAT Improve understanding of the depletion of the ozone layer, with a special emphasis on the changes occurring over Canada and in the Arctic. SCISAT focuses its attention in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is located.

9 ANIK F2 Access for communities in the far and mid-north, and in remote areas of Canada of low-cost, two-way satellite delivery CSA's total investment of $80 million in Anik F2 - provide the Government of Canada with $60-million worth services

10 Background Mission Highlights Systematic global land mass SAR coverage and stereo coverage of entire continents suitable for topographic mapping; Usage of different RADARSAT imaging modes, such as ScanSAR, Standard, Fine, and innovative right-left looking modes; Repeat coverage including InSAR coverage, of selected regions as a means to detect change; and Selected thematic coverage, including Arctic ocean, Antarctic, glaciers and ice caps.

11 RADARSAT 1 Archive Archive is "information rich" – as it was constituted by coherent data acquisition plans (multi-date, varying geometry, varying coverage, seasonally coherent) Significant repeat coverage allows unique change detection, thematic analysis opportunity Complimentary to existing data – optical framework, mapping databases, etc.

13 Arctic Science Archive Processing (ASAP) To increase the use of RADARSAT 1 archive under the IPY Framework and other national priorities Focus on National and Int'l consultation process Initiate the processing of a significant portion of the RADARSAT-1 Canadian archive - received through direct reception at GSS and PASS or recorded data that was played back in Canada Preparation for RADARSAT-2 era; Canada maintaining leading position in space-based SAR remote sensing
