G042 Lecture G042 Feedback 2011 Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk

Session Objectives Highlight common errors which students have made

Task A - Requirements In task A you to: Clearly state what information you need to complete the project, Carry out a range of simple searches each in 3 search engines and compare the results in a table making comment about which engine is best, Carry out a range of advanced searches correctly each in 3 search engines and compare the results in a table, State which of the 3 search engines is best for the rest of your investigation and why – base it on statistical evid3nce and quality of the results yielded, Use the chosen search engine to find the rest of the information required for your investigation using OWN LOGICAL OPERATOR SEARCHES correctly.

Task A – Issues (1) No statement of what looking for Incorrect use of advance search: INCORRECT: Same words used in both boxes CORRECT: Thought about what looking for and made use of the advance search boxes properly

Task A - Issues (2) Limited comparison and reason for choosing which search engine is the best for the rest of investigation Missing quotes (“ “) around phrases in own operator searches and spacing not correct when using + and – Some people did own operator searches in all 3 search engines??? INCORRECT: Quotes missing from phrases and spacing for – sign wrong CORRECT: Quotes been used around phrases and correct spacing round + and – signs used

Task B - Requirements In task B you need to Clearly state what information you need to find from large websites, Clearly show that you have used hyperlinks, menu bars and other navigational features of websites to find the information required, Clearly show you have made use of internal search facilities of a number of large websites, Clearly show you have made use of advanced internal search facilities of a number of large websites. Within your advanced searches you need to use all the facilities including ANDs and range searches

Task B - Issues Not stated what looking for first in enough detail, Need more overt evidence of using menus, navigation bars etc, Make good use of internal searches, Searches on online database missing or not enough of them / variety, Must show results not just the search criteria when using internal searches and comment upon the usefulness

Task C - Requirements Use a local database to find information for your investigation Need a range of searches which use: AND, OR, NOT, >, =>, <, <=, [enter required XXXX], like Calculations / aggregation functions Make reports for each query which are properly formatted so can see all data, have sensible labels and titles

Task C - Issues Queries often for the sake of it – think about what you are looking for, Reports not always formatted with correct titles, sub titles or so all data is showing, Calculation queries not done – use a count query Some peoples queries didn’t work Table where past students gone caused confusion – people thought it was universities which offered courses!!

Task D - Requirements Produce a spreadsheet which can be used to analyse statistics Needs to include a good array of formulae and functions, Needs to present the data in a coherent and neat manor, Macros should be included which assist the input of data or presentation of output,

Task D - Issues Not enough formula used Spreadsheets messy – format them nicley and fit to a landscape page, Too much process – need to see actual sheets and actual sheets in formula view only, Do include screen shot of features used which are not obvious - conditional formatting, Macro code needs to be printed and annotate which bit of code does what

Task E - Requirements A “presentation” of the findings needs to be produced The word “presentation” can be used in its widest sense – making a report or newsletter is better, Must include different types of information which has been imported (copied and pasted) rather than screen shot Must have a bibliography of sources – for band 3 this needs to be detailed

Task E - Issues Too much WHAT I DID…… Not neat or coherent, Too many screenshots rather than import Sources missing or incomplete Include an annotated draft to help write your evaluation.

Task F - Requirements An evaluation of the methods used to search for information and present it, Don’t really want a task be task although most do include some search and/or presentation methods, Need to show refinement for higher marks – drafts, changes to searches etc – annotate during project and write about within the evaluation, Need suggestions of how a similar research task could be completed next time

Task F - Issues ?????? Didn’t see one Use the presentation to help with some of the different search and presentation methods you can comment on
