1 Pine Lake Restoration Society Planning – 2010 and Forward

2 History Significant transition in Board membership and involvement over the last few years Focus on the single critical asset – Pine Lake Hypolimnetic Withdrawal System Monitoring Lake Water Quality through AB Environment and Alberta Lake Management Society

3 What We Know Weed growth in Pine Lake has slowed as a result of the withdrawal system’s preferential removal of high nutrient water –Operation of the withdrawal system has had a positive impact on water quality from a weed growth perspective However, –Filamentous algae remains a significant and frustrating issue for those who enjoy recreational use of the lake –AB Env suggests the algae blooms are catalyzed by spring run off from high nutrient up stream areas

4 What We Need To Do? 2010 - continue to: –Effectively operate the hypolimnetic withdrawal system –Monitor and report on lake water quality 2010 - start to: –Understand localized water quality issues – ex. areas where cattle still watering on lake –Evaluate the quality of streams feeding the lake and relative impact on lake water quality –Evaluate options for up stream water treatment project(s). Identify high priority project and associated scope. –While we wait for upstream projects expected to decrease algae growth: Work with the County to support costs for disposal of algae removed from the lake Evaluate in lake treatment options with input from RDRWSA and AB Env Future: –Fund raise as required – grants, corporate sponsors, etc. –Implement / operate / monitor up stream project –Implement short term in lake treatment options (if viable)
