2 Who wrote it? The National Anthem of the United States of America What is it? Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer and amateur poet Why was it written? To celebrate victory over the British navy in September of 1814 at Fort McHenry

3 The Star-Spangled Banner O say can you see by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming; Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
