4 PEOPLE TO MAKE A FUNDAMENTAL SUSTAINABLE CHANGE IN ACCIDENT PERFORMANCE ORGANISATIONS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THEIR PEOPLE AND INVOLVE THEM IN THE IMPROVEMENT PROCESS !

5 “Customs and Practices”
What is culture ??? Culture is a way of life of a group of people - the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next “Customs and Practices”

6 This give rise to the Spice Girls Syndrome !
It’s the way we do things here !!!! The safe way or the unsafe way ?? Our hidden values and beliefs !!!! This give rise to the Spice Girls Syndrome !

7 What we get is what we really really want !

8 PERHAPS MORE CONTROVERSIALLY
WHAT WE GET IS WHAT WE ARE PREPARED TO ACCEPT !

9 Dealing with the whole iceberg
Attitudes Beliefs Values Visible Invisible Behaviour Thinking 9

10 Culture? Different VALUES and BELIEFS Different ATTITUDES

Values INFLUENCE Attitude INFLUENCE Behaviour Believes Be aware 80% of communication is non verbal Get the job done at all costs Get the job done safely

15 Managers talk about the things that are important to them, people get meaning from this and make decisions on how they carry out tasks ! Safely or Unsafely

16 WHEN IT COMES TO ACCIDENT PERFORMANCE THEREFORE WE GET DIFFERENT RESULTS !

17

18 Some basic beliefs I do not go to work and expect to get hurt.
I do not believe that anybody should expect to go to work and get hurt. People get hurt Causes individual pain and suffering Upset and heartache for the family Despite industry myth - nobody is invincible - the male macho image must be eliminated. Every single employee has an invaluable contribution to make.

25 Stars GOOD ATTITUDE – HIGH INFLUENCE
Always wears PPE and encourages others to do the same Play an active role in RA reviews and updating of SSOW Always stop somebody who they see working unsafely Never walks past an unsafe act High perception and understanding of near misses Recognises that they CAN make a difference Believe that all accidents are preventable GOOD ATTITUDE – HIGH INFLUENCE 25

26 WELL POISONERS POOR ATTITUDE – HIGH INFLUENCE 26

27 WELL POISONERS Only ensure rules are followed when it suits
Set a bad example in their own behaviour Might say “You don’t do that your not safe, leave it to me Turn a blind eye when it suits Allow horseplay in the workplace Encourage people to work unsafely when it suits See RA & SSOW as a nuisance Value getting the job done above everything Believe that accidents are inevitable and the fault of the individual 27

28 Players GOOD ATTITUDE – LOW INFLUENCE Concerned about their own safety
Understand the importance of following SSOW Always wear their PPE Work in a safe manner most of the time Ignore their mate who is working unsafely Do not think that they can make a difference GOOD ATTITUDE – LOW INFLUENCE

29 Walking Dead ! POOR ATTITUDE – LOW INFLUENCE
Do not think safety is important Often do not wear PPE Only work safely when being watched Would not recognise a near miss Thinks accidents are inevitable POOR ATTITUDE – LOW INFLUENCE

30 A Galaxy Of Stars Everybody has a good attitude
Everybody has influence

31 ONE OF THE KEYS TO THE “HOLY GRAIL”

32 FRONT LINE MANAGERS OPERATING ON SHIFT

33 Engaging and gaining commitment from FLM is essential to underpinning the desired culture – in the middle of the night THEY set the standard !

34 Felt Leadership – What is it ?
DOING: The right things DOING AND BEING SEEN: People aware of your influence and actions being directed at the right things DOING AND BEING SEEN AND BEING BELIEVED: People feeling your leadership and actions directed at the right things and sensing that it really matters to you

35 LEARNING TO DRIVE Unconscious incompetence Conscious incompetence
We do not know what we cannot do Conscious incompetence We know we cannot do it Conscious competence We know we can do it and are aware Subconscious competence We are on auto-pilot DANGER !!!!!!

36 “Consciously Competent Zone ?”
The Challenge How do we ensure that people spend ALL of their time in the “Consciously Competent Zone ?”

37 In 2002 at the start of the “Behavioral Change Programme” Hollins identified a vision for 2005 -
Hollins Vision for TO HAVE CREATED AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE FEELS AND DEMONSTRATES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN AND THEIR WORKMATES SAFETY BEHAVIOUR

38 Safety Marshall Reports
People have been generally working to a good safety standard and it is good to see more people showing concern for their own and their mates safety. Jools Higham

39 Hollins Vision for 2008 TO HAVE CREATED AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE PEOPLE WORK TO A COMMON SAFE STANDARD. A SAFE STANDARD WHICH REFLECTS HOW TASKS ARE COMPLETED AND WHICH HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WITH THE INPUT OF THE PEOPLE ACTUALLY DOING THE TASKS.

40 Why do I think we are moving in the right direction?
A winderman judged by his peers to be carrying out an unsafe act was approached by them, the situation was discussed and a change in behaviour agreed and implemented - only later in the shift was the shift manager advised of what had happened, he had no direct involvement.

41 Why do I think we are moving in the right direction?
At a recent Safety session with a shift team they considered that the only thing holding them back was - THEMSELVES AND THEIR ATTITUDES

42 HSE Climate Survey 1999 v 2002

43 HSE Climate Survey 1999 v 2002 v 2004

44 It means EVERYONE, working together, can make a difference !
What does it all mean ? It means EVERYONE, working together, can make a difference !

45 Please remember Safety is not about initiatives which run for a week or a month
IT’S A WAY OF LIFE !!

46 “Customs and Practices”
What is culture ??? Culture is a way of life of a group of people - the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next “Customs and Practices”

47 Some Keys to Success Stable Environment Good foundations
Considered Risk Assessments – gap analysis carried out against regulations and guidance. Effective SSOW that people can and do follow. Managers who display “Visible Demonstrated Leadership” Value Safety Reps and support them fully Involve everyone in the process Understand people, talk openly and honestly

48 If this is a journey how far do you have to travel to know that you have achieved the ultimate destination of a totally safe environment ?
