1 Welcome to BDI 3C! n Units of study in this course n Unit 1: Enterprising People and Entrepreneurs n Unit 2: Ideas and Opportunities n Unit 3: Organizing Resources n Unit 4: Financial Planning n Unit 5: Venture Plan

2 Teacher and Student Expectations n Regular attendance n It is your responsibility to catch up on any missed work n Respect n Treat everyone in the classroom with respect n Active and positive involvement n Apply yourself to the best of your ability n Extra Help n Help is available on a regular basis, arrange it with the teacher n Test and Assignment due dates n if you are absent for a legitimate reason you will write/perform the test or present/hand in the work on the first day back n Assignments are due at the beginning of class and will be docked 15% per day it’s late (medical note is the only exception)

4 n Every Friday the class can watch a business related film or show n Provided n The class shows respect throughout the week n Class work is completed and up to date n Time is not wasted

5 Let me get to know you n On a piece of paper n Write your name n Why you chose to take this course? n Your interests (at least 3) –What your goals are for this course (at least 2)? n What action will you take to achieve your goals? n What are your plans after school (at least 2-3 sentences)?

6 Let’s get down to business! n What is an entrepreneur? n How do entrepreneurs affect our economy?

7 What is Entrepreneurship? n Entrepreneurship exists in your school, your community, across the country and internationally. n Entrepreneurship can include such activities as fund raising or the production of new goods and services to change the way we live.

8 n It can be not-for-profit (community services, improvement projects) as well as the traditional for profit. n Entrepreneur is derived from the French word entreprendre, which means to initiate or undertake.

9 Group Activity n In groups of 3 answer the following question. n What makes an entrepreneur successful? n You have 5 minutes GO!

10 Group Activity #2 n Know your logos!

11 n Entrepreneurship is usually undertaken to meet a need or want from society n The success of one new business venture can produce a variety of additional entrepreneurial opportunities.

12 n Airplanes invented n opportunities opened up for –transportation of goods and people, –travel agencies, –luggage carriers, –duty-free shopping, –in-flight food services.

13 n Can you think of another example?

14 n Entrepreneurship is strong in countries that provide:  Money for starting new ventures is easily accessible  Education and training are available  Free or open trade exists.

15 n Entrepreneurship within a corporation is called intrapreneurship. n Encourages employees to become more competitive  Improve their productivity  Keep pace with changing technology and markets

16 n Entrepreneurs set goals to help themselves stay on track and then work to achieve their goals. n They are able to identify a special need or want in their community. n They then either design a new product/service or adapt and improve an existing one.

17 n Ray Kroc, former owner of McDonald’s, did not invent the hamburger. He took the concept of the hamburger stand and modified it to meet a new opportunity, from which he created a very successful venture. n An entrepreneur is a person, entrepreneurship is a process

18 n Studies of entrepreneurs indicate that individuals whose parents/grandparents were self-employed are more likely to start their own businesses than other people are. n So are entrepreneurs are born or made?

19 n All entrepreneurs are motivated by a desire to be in charge of their own destiny. n Entrepreneurs will talk with anyone who will help them think through a new idea.
