GIS Historical Layer Bibliography A USFWS Pacific Islands Coastal Program Project

The Problem Critical need for access to data and information contained in scientific literature.

A Solution Simple, cost-effective method to identify the literature dealing with specific geographic location or locations in the coral reef and near shore environment in Hawaii.

Progress A Demonstration project funded by the US Fish and Wildlife Service,Coastal Service focused on the island of Oahu was completed in August 2002. Summarized in an ArcUser Online ESRI article, http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0402/d ocmanage1of3.htmlhttp://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0402/d ocmanage1of3.html.

Project Major Elements: Development of a GIS image layer of Oahu using ArcView 3.x Link GIS layer to a database of standardized metadata to reference environmental literature, including Call Numbers for all documents at U. H. Hamilton Library.

..Major Elements Link GIS layer to database of metadata referring to oceanographic and coastal data sets that have been added to the NOAA archive by NOAA/NESDIS/NODC/NCDDC. Provide a demonstration CD-ROM of the ArcView 3.x GIS literature and NOAA coastal archive holdings database.

Phase II Add photocopies of non-copyrighted documents to U.H. Hamilton Library. Expand the GIS marine ecosystem bibliography to encompass all of the Hawaiian archipelago. Begin to add bibliographic metadata for additional Pacific Islands.

The Future Work continues on improvements to the ArcView 3.x GIS tools and layer. Ultimately, this information system should be available via the Internet.
