1 Axel Drees, Stony Brook University BNL review of RHIC detector upgrades, March 14 th 2006 Overview of PHENIX upgrades Goals of PHENIX upgrades program PHENIX upgrades at a glance detector systems and status physics reach of combined system new detector systems not covered today The FVTX and NCC proposals Submitted BNL to seek construction funds starting FY08 PHENIX internal review in December 2005

2 Axel Drees Physics Beyond the Reach of PHENIX High T QCD (AA, pA, and pp): Electromagnetic radiation (e + e  pair continuum) Heavy flavor (c- and b-production) Jet tomography (high p T PID, jet-jet and  -jet) Quarkonium (J/ ,  ’,  c and  (1s),  (2s),  (3s)) Spin structure of the nucleon: Gluon spin structure  G/G (heavy flavor and  -jet correlations) Quark spin structure  q/q (W-production) Low x phenomena gluon saturation in nuclei (particle production at forward rapidity) Provide key measurements so far inaccessible at RHIC in three broad areas: requires highest AA luminosity All measurements base on existing capabilities enhance by detector upgrades

3 Axel Drees Dalitz/conversion rejection (HBD) Precision vertex tracking (VTX) PID (k, ,p) to 10 GeV (Aerogel/TOF) High rate trigger (  trigger) Precision vertex tracking (FVTX) Electron and photon measurements Muon arm acceptance (NCC) Very forward (MPC) PHENIX Detector Upgrades at a Glance Central arms: Electron and Photon measurements Electromagnetic calorimeter Precision momentum determination Hadron identification Muon arms: Muon Identification Momentum determination
