2. Today you are going to learn a strategy that will help you write summaries and understand the main idea of each paragraph when reading expository texts. This strategy can help with any type text, however. A GIST statement is the most important information in a paragraph. It stands for Generating Interactions between Schemata and Text, but you don’t have to know that. Just remember GIST. There are three steps to writing a GIST statement: A. Name the subject of the paragraph (who or what it is about). B. Tell the most important information about the subject. C. State the main idea in 10 words or less.

12. Read “Fire and Ice” Number each paragraph. Complete all three steps of the GIST strategy for each of the paragraphs using the organizer on the back of the page. Look back at all your GIST statements/notes and create two or three sentences that could summarize the entire passage. Write them on you’re the paper provided. This will be your entry ticket into class tomorrow. We will use this entry ticket to do a group activity to check for understanding and mastery tomorrow. The group you are in today, will be the group you work in to complete this GIST strategy activity.
