1 Effective summarizing leads to an increase in student learning. Summarizing requires students to focus on the MAIN IDEA of a text and decide what is important without omitting key ideas. Tuesday, November 3, 2015

2 Today you are going to learn a strategy that will help you write summaries and understand the main idea of each paragraph when reading expository texts. This strategy can help with any type text, however. A GIST statement is the most important information in a paragraph. It stands for Generating Interactions between Schemata and Text, but you don’t have to know that. Just remember GIST. There are three steps to writing a GIST statement: A. Name the subject of the paragraph (who or what it is about). B. Tell the most important information about the subject. C. State the main idea in 10 words or less.

3 Sample Paragraph: Coral reefs are like underwater cities. They are full of energy and activity. More species of sea creatures and plants live on coral reefs than anywhere else in the ocean. A. Who or what is the paragraph mostly about? B. What is the most important information about the subject? C. Write the GIST in a complete sentence of 10 words or less. Coral Reefs They are like cities – more life there than anywhere else in the ocean City-like coral reefs are full of ocean life.

4  Sample Paragraph: The Lewis and Clark Expedition is considered by many to be the greatest adventure in American history. The 1803 purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France had doubled the area of the United States. Curious about the vast new territory west of the Mississippi River, President Thomas Jefferson ordered the expedition, which set off from St. Louis in the spring of 1804. Without maps or modern equipment, thirty-two men, one woman, and a baby ventured into the unknown. For four years, the group journeyed across thousands of unexplored miles, crossing mountains and rivers. The experience was filled with excitement, danger, and discovery.
