5 Current Process Local HTML Files UNC Web Server These are flat files sitting in a web author’s folder with text and HTML content all in one document.

6 How Does It Work? Public Web Server CMS ServerWeb Author Content is stored in a database, the template structure is stored separately, CMS server combines them.

8 So What? o “Structure” can be changed without affecting content o Content can be single sourced (like a Dreamweaver library item) o Content can be shared o Content can be scheduled o Content can be searched

10 What Will Conversion Be Like? Goal is to move all sites to CMS system Recruitment sites will be first priority for assistance New pages, cut and paste info from current site or clean Word doc Old site will be archived for one year Will be training through CETL and Web Comm

11 When Will This Happen? What we know now – Omni begins working on UNC templates in early Sept – Omni anticipates about three months for template coding and testing – Training will then happen for web team – Training will be scheduled for web authors – New permission forms will be submitted – Possibility of phased approach

13 Content? o Is it accurate? o Is it current? o Is it written for the audience? o Is it well written? o Is it the right amount of information? o Is it organized well?

15 Think Like a User What do users want from your site? – What type of questions do you get? – Ask them – Research it – Stamats Teens Talk, national associations, conferences, award winning sites – Look at analytics

16 Writing for Web o Front load the main point o Use words users use o Use second person voice o Chunk content o Use short sentences and paragraphs o Use bulleted lists o Use clear headings o Use proper punctuation check spelling

17 Search Engine Optimization To help us be found in organic searches Not only words but correct HTML markup There will be training as part of the CMS training

19 Is It the Right Amount? Of information? Of words? Web site is not a file cabinet When in doubt, leave it out

21 Content Inventory The page is accurate, up to date, and ready for migration The page is required but needs corrections before migration The page is obsolete or no longer needed and should not be migrated

23 The Navigation Top level navigation means: – Sixish main categories of links – Drop downs will be level two navigation – Pages will have right side navigation for level 3 and, in rare cases, level 4 pages
