Chapter 4

Drive – The largest storage area. The C: Drive is usually the hard drive, but you can have other drives on your network or on a separate device such as your CD drive. Folder – A place to save and organize files, such as documents or pictures. File – A collection of data. Files can be text, graphics, or other types of media such as audio or video clips.

Organize – Group similar files together into one folder, just as you would put your socks in one drawer. Name or Rename – Use names that describe what is in the file or folder. Use easy to remember names. Move or Copy – Make sure you know where the file or folder was originally located and where it is being copied or moved. Otherwise, you might accidentally place the item in the wrong place. Delete – When you delete a file on your computer’s hard drive, it goes into the Recycle Bin. You can restore the deleted file at any time until you empty the Recycle Bin.

 You can duplicate, or copy, a file by using the Save As  command.  This allows you to rename a file and at the same time copy the file by saving it to a new location.  Use Save As or Copy when you want to make changes to a file and still keep the original.  Files have a three or four letter extension after the file name.  This tells the computer if the file is a text document, a graphic  a sound clip and so on. For example Word 2007 documents  have “.docx” at the end. Photograph file names have “.jpg”. Using Save A

A short cut is an icon that is a direct link to a file or folder. When you use certain files or folders a lot, you can create shorts cuts for them on the desktop.
