2 Why use a Parentheses? ( )
Parentheses are used to enclose ( ) words or figures that add further clarification to writing. Parentheses can be used to set off words, phrases, clauses, or even full sentences when more explanation or translation is needed. I shopped at my favorite boutique (One World Shoppe). Marc worked at the warehouse store (for the last ten years) in order to support his family. They wanted to get treats (popcorn, candy, and soda) at the concession stand. ( )

Use full parentheses ( ) to enclose numbers or letters used for listed items. Albert was a great baseball player because he can (1) hit the ball well especially in tight games, (2) play defense and read the ball well, and (3) be a good team player. ( )

4 Rules for Usage When using parentheses with other punctuation marks, punctuate the main part of the sentence as if the ( ) were not there.  A punctuation mark comes after the second parenthesis if the punctuation is for the whole sentence and not just the part in ( ). Even though she had a record of tickets (two parking and 2 speeding), she planned to appeal the judge’s decision. Anna earned her degree from an accredited institution (the one that advertises on TV often). ( )
