1 Percent and Estimation

2 The table shows common percents and their fraction equivalents
The table shows common percents and their fraction equivalents. You can use fractions to estimate the percent of a number by choosing a fraction that is close to a given percent. Percent Fraction 20% 33 % 1 3 66 % 2 3 10% 25% 50% 75% 1 10 1 5 1 4 1 3 1 2 2 3 3 4 Divide by 10 Divide by 5 Divide by 4 Divide by 3 Divide by 2 Divide by 3, multiply by 2 Divide by 4, multiply by 3

3 Remember:”Of” means to multiply
EX 1) Use a fraction to estimate 27% of 63. 27% X 63  Round 27% to a percent that is easy to change to a fraction like 25% . 1 4 25% X 63  X 63 1 4 X 64 Change 63 to a number that will be easily simplified by the fraction.  16 Multiply. 27% of 63 is about 16.

4 Estimate percents by figuring 10%. Use mental math.
EX 2) Estimate 38% of 91. Round 38% to 40% and 91 to 90. 40% of 90 Find 10% of 90 = 9 Since there are 4 – 10% in 40%, multiply by 4 9 X 4 = 36 38% X 91 ≈ 36. 38% of 91 is about 36. EX 3) Estimate ½ % of 240. EX 4) Estimate 5% of 70. 10% of 240 = 24 10% of 70 = 7 1% of 240 = 2.4 5% of 70 = 3.5 ½ % of 240 = 1.2
