What is an e-book?

E-books continued  E-books, instead of traditional ink and paper are electronic books. They can be read on your computer, reader or laptop screen. Rather than going through the print process, it is presented electronically and requires a device to display the print or images.

E-Book Readers  The new reading platforms, called e-book readers, are small, lightweight, battery- operated, rechargeable devices that have enough memory to store several e-books at one time. E-books can be read like a traditional book or read on the screen of a desktop or laptop computer, a PDA or a dedicated e-book reader. Even if you don’t own an e-book reader, special formats allow them to be accessed in many ways.

E-Reader Benefits  Portability: Light, Thin  Large Storage Capacity/Long Battery Life  Designed to Mimic a real book  Easy Screen readability  Easy to download books

Download books from the Library to your device  Before you purchase e-books from vendors like Amazon or from the iBookstore, see what your local library has to offer. With a library card and a free application, Overdrive Media Console, you can download free e-books and audio books to your iPhone (and any other iOS device), BlackBerry, Android device, or computer. .

Download library books to your Computer, Nook, Sony Reader, and other related devices.  If you don’t already have Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer, you need to download this onto your device. Overdrive uses Adobe Digital Editions to handle its digital rights management. Create a free account, as prompted, so you can authorize your computer to read the books. If transferring the book to the Nook, remember to use the same e-mail address and the same password as on your Nook to eliminate possible problems authorizing your books. 10 Check into the online Library system using your account, typically by putting in your card number and pin. You can search without being signed in, but when you add a book to the cart and proceed to check out, you must be signed in. Check out times range from 7 to 21 days. You can usually check out a number of books at a time. The books check in automatically when the time expires.

Confirm checkout. A drop-down menu will let you know the time period the book is available for.

Download and Open in Adobe Digital Editions On your Bookshelf, click the download link to download a file which Adobe Digital Editions will use to download the actual ebook. You can save the file to your computer to read online. You can also just choose to open with Adobe Digital Editions.

Adobe Digital Editions will download the actual e-book and open it in your computer. Click on the Library icon (where the red arrow is pointing). Your books will display as titles or as images.

Placing a hold on a book  If the book you wish to check out is already checked out, you may place a hold by clicking on the hold button, entering your library card and pin and entering your e-mail address.  You will receive an e-mail from the library when the book is available, with a link to the digital collection. Enter your library card and pin and check out the book.  You will typically have two days to check out the book, then the hold will expire.
