3 THE GRACCHI BROTHERS link Sons of Tiberius Gracchus the Elder and Cornelia Africana Tiberius was the elder and was born between 168 and 163 BC Gaius was the 3 rd child of the family, and was born 154 BC Their family was very well connected in Roman politics. Spoiler! They both get murdered!

4  Tiberius was elected tribune in 133 BC, promising reform Reasons for want of reform:  Military  Growth of unrest among unemployed –  To relieve economic depression in Rome itself TIBERIUS GRACCHUS

5  Wanted to limit the amount of land each person could own  You could own 500 iugera (325 acres) yourself  You could own an extra 250 iugera for each son you had  Wanted to rebuild the farming class by redistributing land  The Senate was resistant to the reforms because it’s members owned most of the land and it was the basis of their wealth. 7  Tiberius runs for 2 nd term  Not another king!  March to his house! THE DEATH OF TIBERIUS

8 Tiberius was beat to death by pieces of chairs, wielded by senators. Him and 300 of his followers were murdered and thrown in the Tiber river. This was to ensure he didn’t get a proper burial. MURDER OF TIBERIUS GRACCHUS link

10  Gaius lost re-election  Gaius responded by creating an army of followers.  Senate passed a Senatus consultum ultimum -  Optimus defeats Gaius  Gaius commits suicide  Even though he died, many of his reforms stood after his death GAIUS

11  Tiberius:  Elected Tribune in 133 BC  Tried to bring about land reforms  Murdered by senators in 133B  Marcus Octavius  Fellow tribune to Tiberius  Tried to veto Tiberius’ land reform bill  Participated in the murders of both brothers.  Gaius  Elected Tribune in 123 BC  Continued his brother’s land reforms  Introduced free bread law  Committed suicide in 121 BC IMPORTANT FACTS/DATES
