2 Passchendaele  Also known as the 3rd battle Ypres  An attempt to back Belgium sea ports from the Germans  Main attack was to go over the low laying areas – subject to flooding

3 Passchendaele  British Offensive, ordered by General Haig  Sent the Canadians in – hoping for similar success to that of Vimy  General Currie predicted it would cost us 16,000 men - didn’t think it was worth it!

4 Passchendaele  Artillery destroyed dams and cannels resulting in flooding and mud  “Creeping Barrage” failed – too much mud

5 Passchendaele - MUD

6 Passchendaele  Approx. 15,600 men were killed.

7 Passchendaele  Village of Passchendaele

8 Passchendaele  Harry Patch – 2007.  Last surviving British Veteran of Passchendaele – age 109
