1 Kenneth T. Whitby Award American Association for Aerosol Research

2 The Kenneth T. Whitby Award “recognizes outstanding technical contributions aerosol science and technology by a young scientist. The purpose of the award is to encourage continued work in the field and ongoing support of such endeavors”. The award honors Kenneth T. Whitby, known for his contributions to aerosol measurement, the study of aerosol properties and behavior, and the nature of atmospheric aerosols.

3 2009 Recipient of the Kenneth T. Whitby Award James N. Smith, Ph.D. National Center for Atmospheric Research Nominated by Professor Peter H. McMurry Ph.D. at Caltech, 2000 Visiting Professor, University of Helsinki, 2007 33 referred journal articles on kinetics of water uptake, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, electrospray ionization, aerosol instruments, chemical characterization Project leader of Thermal Desorption Chem. Ionization Mass Spec (TDCIMS), “… the only instrument in the world capable of measuring the chemical makeup of freshly nucleated, size-selected particles as small as 6 nm” “Jim’s 2008 GRL paper, which identified organic compounds responsible for fast NP growth rate, is a very important paper that will guide future modeling efforts.” “…shown exemplary leadership by leading a 2-yr workshop series on organic aerosols for a group of early career scientists from the US and Nordic countries…”
