What is the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program? ► Permits Ohio high school students in grades 9-12 to earn college credit ► Promotes rigorous academic pursuits ► Provides a variety of options to high school students ► Enacted by Ohio Legislature in 1989 for 11 th & 12 th grade and expanded in 1997 to include 9 th & 10 th grade ► In 1999 added requirement that students must have a 3.0 GPA in the subject they wish to take at the college

3. What is Option A and Option B? Option A ► Student receives only college credit ► Cost is paid by student and/or parent Option B ► Student receives both high school and college credit ► Cost is paid by the public school’s foundation funds ► Cost of tuition, books, materials & fees all paid by the school district

4. Who is eligible to participate? ► Any student enrolled in an Ohio public or nonpublic high school in grades 9 thru 12 9 th graders, may enroll up to four academic years (8 semesters; 12 quarters) 10 th graders, may enroll up to three academic years (6 semesters; 9 quarters) 11 th graders, may enroll up to two academic years (4 semesters; 6 quarters) 12 th graders, may enroll up to one academic year (2 semester; 3 quarters) ► Must have a 3.0 GPA in the subject you wish to take at the college

How do you apply? ► See your high school counselor for necessary forms, information & deadlines ► Student and parents must engage in counseling with their school counselor to be aware of the risks and consequences, limited funding, & effect on student’s ability to graduate ► Students and parents must sign a form indicating that appropriate counseling was provided and all responsibilities for participation are understood

6. What are the timelines? ► March 1: schools must notify all students of the PSEO Program ► March 30: all students must notify school of their intent to participate (form) ► Eligible student may apply and enroll in a college at any time in grades 9-12 ► Within 10 days: if student is accepted, college sends written notice to the student, school, and Dept. of Ed. ► Within 10 days of enrollment for a term: college sends notice to the student, school and Dept. of Ed. ► August: state is notified of participants ► April 30 of following year: school completes funding forms for all students who have participated for that school year ► July: state makes payment to the college for courses completed

7. Additional information ► You must be admitted by an eligible post-secondary institution ► The college may have special requirements you must meet ► You must decide on Option A or Option B ► The school uses a formula to determine high school credits earned for college courses ► You may attend college full-time or part-time depending on the credits you need to graduate ► You may not replace the English required for graduation with a Composition course (it does not meet state curriculum standards)

Risks ► Increased responsibility ► Increased financial obligations ► Reduced time for school activities ► Grades & GPA could be affected ► Scholarship opportunities could be affected ► Increased travel and study time ► Difference in content from high school to college courses ► No guarantee you will get the courses you want ► Social discomfort with older students ► Risks for withdrawal from a course
