A book cover is the outside of the book.
Each book cover can look different.
The title or name of the story is on the book cover.
The book cover usually has an illustration or picture.
You can tell what a story is about by looking at the book cover.
The first page in the book is the title page.
The title of the story is on the title page.
Usually there is an illustration or photo on the title page.
The name of the author or writer and the name of the illustrator or artist is on the title page.
The table of contents tells you the sections of the book in order.
The table of contents tells you what page each section starts on.
Sometimes it only says Contents instead on Table of Contents.
The table of contents tells you what you will find in this book.
The caption is usually written smaller and under or next to the photo.
Sometimes it is written on the photo.
Captions tell us what is happening in the photo.
Don’t forget to read the captions to learn more about the photo.
A heading is usually the largest group of words.
The heading tells you what the topic or section is about.
Read the large words or headings to know what you are about to read.
The glossary is like a dictionary and tells you what words in the book mean.
A glossary is at the back of the book.
The bold words are defined by the lighter colored words.
So when you don’t know what a word means you can look it up in the back of the book.
By Morgan Title A title is a few words that tells you the main subject of the book. Example: Dolphins.
By: Gracie Italics Italics show special words that the author wants you to notice. For example: There is a small new kid.
By Madilyn BOLD WORDS A bold word is a word that you might not know. Example: I like to eat pizza.
By Stephanie Bold words Bold words are darker than the rest. Example: Snowy days are fabulous.
By Amelia Illustration An illustration is a another word for the drawings. For example the illustrator illustrates the pictures.
