Electrical Engineering Department EE-430 IP Telephony Presented by Adeeb Al-Harbi ID#233201

What is the IP Telephony? -Transmission of voice traffic over data network - Also known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - And Internet telephony, Broadband telephony. - VoIP carry telephony signals as digital audio. - Typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques, encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP -VoIP is especially popular with long-distance calls - The cost is the main reason for people that are using VoIP - Most people use it for free.

Why Do We Use IP Telephony? -IP Telephony has some features that are not available with a traditional phone -It can reduce the cost. - We can make international call with less cost rather than the tradition telephone -You can take your VoIP phone every where you go and just connect it to the broadband internet and you will receive your incoming calls. -VoIP can also be able to transmit more than one telephone call down in the same broadband-connected telephone line

How do we use the Voice over IP? -We have three ways for doing calling over IP:  ATA or Analog Telephone Adaptor, is the famous way of using VoIP The ATA change the analog signal that your home phone use into digital signals that can be sent over the Internet.  The IP Phone is just looks like a normal phone, with all the same pattern. But it has an Ethernet connector instead of a normal wall jack connector.  The Computer-to-computer calls are entirely free by using some service, that mean there is no need for any calling plans. The only things you need are the software, a good internet connection, a microphone, speakers and a sound card

IP Telephony Challenges  UDP doesn't ensure that packets arrived correctly  Faces problems with Latency and Jitter, variation in delay  Emergency calls are one of the problems because VoIP can't find the nearest center geographically.
