3  Understand their role in the parent community  Know ways they can be involved in their child’s classroom and school.  Understand the role of a student at Seven Hills.  Understand the many new initiatives at Seven Hills.

5 Seven Hills Elementary will teach the intended curriculum, assess and monitor students’ progress, help students and parents set goals based on clear expectations, and provide appropriate safety in preparation for a rigorous middle school curriculum.

6 You can use the same login and password that you used last year. New students to Seven Hills have been issued a letter with the parent login and password. If you have lost or do not know your password you can call the office.

7  We will have at least two parent/teacher conferences this year. One in the Fall and one in the Spring.  You may start signing up TONIGHT!!  Our Fall conferences will be completed by October 11, 2010.

8  Making sure my child is rested and prepared for school each day.  Knowing how your child is doing by communicating with the teacher by STAR binder, email, in person or by phone.  Monitor your child’s homework and make sure study time is in a quiet place.  Limit TV viewing and read together daily.  Be an active participant in your child’s education.

9 Reading EVERY night, refer to Reading teacher’s website for extra support. Practice spelling patterns. Practice math facts (flash cards, games, etc.) Practice real life things like counting money, telling time, measuring, etc.

10  HW may be assigned throughout the week. Homework should take no more than 30 minutes.  Students should read at least 20 minutes every night.  Math-Practice and repetition is very important.

11  What do we want your children to know?  How will we know when they know it?  What are we going to do when they don’t know?  What are we going to do when they do know it?

13 Routines Independent Reading/Small Groups Artifacts: Reader’s NB, Goal Book, Reading Log, Reading Level, Million Word Graph

14 They record reading every day! Reading at home counts toward Million Word Challenge. Parental Initials are required on the log. Logs are checked 1x per week. Reading books & Library books come home weekly.

15 We’ll study numerous works by the author: Allen Say Students will discover his craft, what ideas they can turn into writing and the reoccurring themes in his books.

16 Routines/Ideas Independent Writing/Small Groups Artifacts: Writer’s NB, Goal Book, Work in Progress Folder

17 Using patterns to understand and form long-term spelling habits Using high-frequency words We practice daily in class with assessments following the spelling patterns

18 3 rd Graders are held accountable for all second grade grammar, spelling, and conventions (capitalization and punctuation)

19 Introduction, Work Period, Closing (Investigations Curriculum) Anchor Charts Notebooking We will be using Goal Notebooks Please practice at home. : )

20 Hands-on Curriculum We use the Science Inquiry process: –Question –Hypothesis –Experiment –Data –Conclusion Notebooking

22 Book of the Month Million Word Challenge Battle of the Books Integrate all books into LA.

23 We use bulletin boards as teaching tools. Standards boards highlight the students’ work that met or exceeded the standard.

26 Math TAKS Test – Tuesday, April 26, 2011 Reading TAKS Test – Wednesday – April 27, 2011 We will take benchmarks to assess how students are progressing.

27 Specials 10:50-11:45 Lunch 11:45-12:15 Recess 12:15-12:30 We have a full day and work up until 2:45. It is very important that your child is here on time and stays to the very end of the day.
