2  Definition:  Manufacturing is the application of knowledge demonstrated through the use of tools, processes, machines, and systems to transform raw materials or substances into new products.

3  There are total of 473 different types of manufacturing industries,  Everything from guided missiles to manufacturing tortilla’s,  Growth in manufacturing is increasing around the world,  The U.S. still ranks as the number one country for manufacturing,

4  Japan is ranked second based on:  It’s focus on lifetime employment,  Implementing robotic technology, ▪ Currently Japan owns 410,000 of the 720,000 known operational robots in the world,  The automotive industry has a huge impact on manufacturing:  When sales are up, manufacturing thrives,  When sales are down, plants close,

5  Manufacturing means “production” of a(n) item,  Lean production is sometimes referred to a “Lean manufacturing”,  Involves more than just producing quality products, it includes: ▪ Just in time production, ▪ On-time parts supply, ▪ Continually studying the assembly process to make improvements,

6  International manufacturing relies on:  Cheap labor,  Transportation costs,  Government incentives,  Company partnerships,  Production moves to Mexico,  NAFTA- North American Free Trade Agreement, ▪ Encouraged free trade between U.S., Canada, and Mexico, ▪ Created “maquiladora”, ▪ Industrial parks located in Mexico, owned by Mexican and American companies,

7  Using the Internet and the textbook, complete one of the following:  A one page explanation of the NAFTA agreement,  A one page explanation of how NAFTA has impacted manufacturing in the United States,  A one page overview of what you believe manufacturing in the United States will look like in the year 2025,
