Air Pollution By: Chrissy Badalamenti, Amie Maxwell and Mitch Miller

What is air pollution? There are two main types of air pollution: Ozone and Particle pollution. There is also indoor and outdoor pollution Ozone is a colorless and odorless gas. Particle pollution consists of microscopic particles in the air. Both Ozone and Particle pollution are not healthy to breath. There are short term and long term effects of pollution.

Ozone Pollution Ozone pollution is an odorless and colorless gas, which is the same kind of gas in the ozone layer. The ozone layer in the Earth’s atmosphere protects us from the sun If these gases are inhaled at they are harmful. Ground level ozone forms when pollutants from cars, trucks, power plants, industries, and some consumer products “cook” in the sun. Ozone usually peaks in the afternoon when sunlight is most intense.

Particle Pollution Particle pollution is a mixture of tiny solids and liquid droplets floating in air. This pollution is made up many things, like acids, organic chemicals, metals, soil or dust particles, and allergens (such as pollen or mold spores). Unlike summertime ozone gas, particle pollution happens year-round, and can cause serious health problems

Indoor Pollution This of because of the chemicals in a home after a long period of time Mold growing in a home Gas heaters and appliances Tobacco smoke Fireplaces Cleaning products

Indoor Pollution In Your Home

Outdoor Pollution Outdoor pollution comes from… - Cars/car exhaust -Factories -Acid rain -The Greenhouse Effect -Holes in the Ozone layer

What Causes Air Pollution? The two main causes of air pollution are transportation and the burning of fossil fuels Carbon dioxide is a major pollutant Pollution is blamed greatly on human activity

Short Term Effects Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat Can cause bronchitis or pneumonia May cause headaches, nausea, and allergic reactions Pollution can be very dangerous for people with asthma

Long Term Effects Respiratory disease Lung cancer Heart disease Damage to the brain, nerves, liver, lungs or kidneys

Possible Solutions Hybrid cars Fabric grocery bags Re-usable water bottles Carpooling Cut down on the amount of fossil fuels being burned Plant trees instead of destroying them Reduce, reuse and recycle everything you can
