2 Today we are going to tell you something about Newcastle. The city is 2000 years old and it was a Roman settlement. Today it is one of the biggest cities in England and it is also a huge cultural centre, which is famous for its night life.

3 The city was founded as a Roman settlement, named Pons Aelious. It was next to the Hadrian wall, which Represented a border of the Roman empire. Later mining developed here. In the 16th century Newcastle was a very important Port, which Newcastle was famous for. In 19th century industrial revolution started.

4 Newcastle is in Great Britain in the North-east of England. To be specific on the Northern bank of the river Tyne. Tyne gives a name to a country Tyne and Wear where it is placed.

5 The mayoress of Newcatle is Jackie Slesenger. The city council which contains 78 councils helps her. Newcastle has 26 districts. For every district there are three councils. The most important is Nick Forbes.

6 One of the famous sights of Newcastle is its castle, which also gave the name to the city. It was built in the 11th century, actually in 1080 under the lead of Robert the second, who was William the Conqueror’s son.

7 This bridge is famous, because it leans. It is in a district Quay near the river Tyne. When a ship goes under the bridge, it goes Up and it goes down for the pedestrians. It was opened in 2001. It cost 22 million pounds. Volker Stevin built it.

8 The architect of the Theatre Royal was Benjamin Green. Benjamin had a brother John Green who was an architect too and he built a lot of buildings in this town. Theatre Royal is a theatre in Grey street. It was opened in 1837. In 1899 a huge fire destroyed its inner part. In 1901 it was re-opened.

9 In Newcastle there were in 2010 292 000 inhabitants, 86% of them are white people, 7% are Asians and 2% are black people. The regional name for people from Newcastlen and its surrounding is Geordie.

10 Newcastle is known for its many festivals. The most famous are Beer festival and Chinese festival. People often go to theatres and museums. In Newcastle concerts in Metroradio arena are popular too.

11 Newcastle is recognised for its night life. It is on the 3rd place for its entertainment just after London and Berlin. There are many restaurants, bars... where people go at night.

12 The full name of Newcastle is Newcastle upon Tyne. The river gives name too many different things in the city. Two celebraties from Newcastle are Cheryl Cole and Rowan Atkinson, who is a famous Mr. Bean.
