Strategy for Advanced Multiplication Nadine Gilkison

2
Upon completion of this exercise, you will: Learn the definition of lattice and the lattice method of solving a multiplication problem Learn some history of lattice multiplication Learn procedures for a 2 by 2 lattice Line up digits in the proper place value before adding the sub products to find the correct answer Practice some lattice style multiplication problems

3
Lattice is a method of multiplication that will work for all multiplication problems! A lattice keeps your numbers organized.

4
The Lattice Form of Multiplication dates back to the 1200’s or before in Europe. It gets its name from the fact that to do the multiplication you fill in a grid which resembles a lattice one might find ivy growing on.

5
As you get ready to learn this process remember to: Think positive Try your personal best Have an open mind ready for learning

6
First, we will draw a box similar to the one that will appear next.

7
Next, divide the box into four equal parts.

8
Now, divide each small box diagonally from the top right to the bottom left.

9
2 3 3 7 You are now ready to place the numbers for your problem. Let’s practice with the problem 23 X 37. Watch to see where the numbers should be placed.

10
2 7 3 3 We are now ready to multiply. Begin by placing the product of 2 X 3 within the grid as shown. (click mouse 4 times) Now do the same process for 3 X 3 (click mouse 6 times) 6 00 9

11
2 7 3 3 Continue the same process with the second row beginning with 2 X 7. (click mouse 4 times) Now complete the grid with 3 X 7. (click mouse 6 times) 6 00 9 1 4 2 1

12
2 7 3 3 6 00 9 1 4 2 1 Now you will extend your lines and make them into arrows pointing southwest.

13
2 7 3 3 6 00 9 1 4 2 1 Now scribble out the numbers from the multiplication problem because you are done multiplying.

14
2 7 3 3 6 00 9 1 4 2 1 You are almost finished! Start with the bottom right-hand corner and add diagonally. 1 5 1 8 0

15
2 7 3 3 6 00 9 1 4 2 1 Watch as the answer is circled. 1 5 1 8 0 So the answer to the problem is… 23 X 37 851

17
5 8 6 4 0 32 4 4 0 3 2 Just click the mouse once to see the problem. Then, try to complete the grid by yourself. Once you fill in the grid, begin clicking the mouse to see if your answers in the boxes match the computer.

18
5 8 6 4 0 32 4 4 0 3 2 27 6 3 Now, add the columns diagonally after you click the mouse once. When you think you have completed your addition, begin clicking the mouse to see if you match the computer. The correct answer is 3,672! How did you do?

19
9 2 4 6 6 32 4 1 8 1 2 Just click the mouse once to see the problem. Then, try to complete the grid by yourself. Once you fill in the grid, begin clicking the mouse to see if your answers in the boxes match the computer.

20
9 2 4 6 6 32 4 1 8 1 2 23 0 4 1 1 Now, add the columns diagonally after you click the mouse once. When you think you have completed your addition, begin clicking the mouse to see if you match the computer. The correct answer is 4,032! How did you do?

21
5 8 9 7 5 46 3 4 0 5 6 Just click the mouse once to see the problem. Then, try to complete the grid by yourself. Once you fill in the grid, begin clicking the mouse to see if your answers in the boxes match the computer.

22
5 8 9 7 5 46 3 4 0 5 6 6 1 5 8 5 Now, add the columns diagonally after you click the mouse once. When you think you have completed your addition, begin clicking the mouse to see if you match the computer. The correct answer is 5,586! How did you do?

23
7 9 8 4 6 53 2 6 3 3 6 Just click the mouse once to see the problem. Then, try to complete the grid by yourself. Once you fill in the grid, begin clicking the mouse to see if your answers in the boxes match the computer.

24
7 9 8 4 6 53 2 6 3 3 6 68 5 1 6 Now, add the columns diagonally after you click the mouse once. When you think you have completed your addition, begin clicking the mouse to see if you match the computer. The correct answer is 6,586! How did you do?
