Vocabulary and Information Deterrent-something or someone that will discourage you from doing something because you are worried, afraid of bad consequences. Ignorance of the law is no excuse-A theory or legal concept that prevents citizens from using the excuse “I didn’t know” to get out of trouble. Everyone is responsible for knowing the law. Incarceration-The act of being jailed or put into prison as a punishment for a crime. Rehabilitation-Strategy to cure or fix a type of bad behavior. Recidivism-The act of repeating crimes even after you have been punished [people who do this are called repeat offenders]. Parole-Early release from prison usually for good behavior or due to prison overcrowding [incentive for prison inmates to behave]. Probation-A punishment instead of jail that requires people suffer restrictions in behavior such as curfews and reporting to an probation officer often. Community Service-A punishment that requires people to perform deeds for the benefit of the community to make up for their crimes. Mental institution-Facility used to treat and detain people deemed psychologically incapable of adjusting to public society.

FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING ASSIGNMENTS. Complete each of the following assignments on the next four slides.

Government Info : Click it or Ticket As a member of the North Carolina General Assembly [House of Representatives or Senate] and the Highway Traffic Control Committee you have been asked to come up with a plan to advertise the new seat belt campaign Click it or Ticket because of an increase in car wreck fatalities as a result of motorists not wearing seat belts and being ejecting from cars [this will cost millions of tax dollars to advertise]. Website-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Click_it_or_ticket You may also be a member of the North Carolina General Assembly who voted against the campaign. Make a poster or write a billboard advertisement.

Government Info : Move Over laws As a member of the North Carolina General Assembly [House of Representatives or Senate] and the Highway Traffic Control Committee you have been asked to come up with a specific plan to advertise the new Move Over laws as a result of highway vehicle accidents due to slow moving traffic in the far left [fast lane] [this will cost millions of tax dollars to advertise]. This also applies to passenger vehicles moving over when passing stopped law enforcement vehicles on expressways as well as moving over to the right side of the road when emergency vehicles have their sirens on. Website-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Move_over_law You may also be a member of the North Carolina General Assembly who voted against the campaign. Make a poster or write a billboard advertisement.

Attorney General/District Attorney’s Letter to the Public You are North Carolina’s Attorney General or the District Attorney of a local government and have seen a large increase in the number of defendants [accused persons] in criminal cases saying they did not know what they did was illegal. Explain in an open letter to the public on your website or the local newspaper or commercial that Ignorance of the law is no excuse and you now have a plan in place to inform and educate the public in order to correct this too widespread problem (You must explain all of the specific details of the plan).

Scaring People Straight: Deterring Crime with Threats of stringent punishment [Preventing Recidivism] Your county or city has experienced a sharp increase in crimes of all kinds, but especially violent crimes. Additionally, juveniles [people under 18] have also begun to commit crimes and repeat higher rates. Recidivism is when citizens repeat crimes even after they have been punished several times. The local District attorney [prosecutor] has decided to institute tougher punishments for all types of crimes. Incarceration [jailing or imprisonment] has not worked in every case and it costs millions of dollars in tax money at a time when available tax money is scarce. Depending on the crime you will use any or all the following strategies to attempt to deter future crime and rehabilitate criminals: mental institutions, parole, probation, juvenile detention, community service, house arrest and boot camps. Explain to the public how each of these steps will specifically help deter/prevent crime and/or rehabilitate criminals [write a letter or create a billboard advertisement].
