Primary Categories: Gender, sexual orientation, age, race, ethnicity, physical abilities and qualities. Secondary Ctegories: Education, work experience, income, marital status, religious beliefs, geographic location, parental status, and personal style. Source: Adapted from Bradford, S. 3 Sex and Gender Gender is not the same as sex
Sex is biologically determined but can be changed by re-assignment Sex refers to the biological differences between women and men Gender refers to the differential social roles that define women and men in a specific cultural context

On an axis of identity definition: people identify as male or female firstly then on the basis of their sexuality then ?

5 GENDER ROLES Gender roles vary greatly in different societies and cultures Age, race and class are major factors which determine our gender roles Gender roles are fluid and can be deconstructed and reconstructed into different roles

List 10 role expectations/behaviours associated with men List 10 role expectations/behaviours associated with women List 10 famous historical female figures and identify something about them List 10 historical men figures and identify something about them

8 Names, Names Names Sweety Names
List the nicknames and terms used to describe men, women and transgender Do not filter your terms put down any that come to mind Divide them into 3 columns - Positive Negative and Neutral You can also identify whether the term is a strong or weak term

9 QUESTIONS What is the best thing about being a man/woman?
When did you first realise or become a man/woman? What is the one piece of advice you would give to a male growing up/woman? What would you change about being a man/woman if you could? What does being a man/woman mean to you? What gender stereotypes do you have re the opposite gender? If you could what one thing you would change about the opposite gender? Who is/was your most important role model in the opposite gender? What is the most important lesson or advice they gave?
