Tuesday Faith Formation SHARING THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL

The Human Person

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl upon the earth.’ God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them. Genesis 1: 26-27

1. Made by God and for God

Created in his image and likeness What is man that you should keep him in mind, mortal man that you care for him? Yet you have made him little less than a god; with glory and honour you crowned him. Psalm 8: 5-6 The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself CCC 27 The Father loves us enough to make us his children and we shall be like him (cf 1 John 3:1-3)

The human Person is fully revealed in Christ In him we live and move and have our being... (Acts 17:28) God has created man in his own Image, in the image of God he created him... Man occupies a unique place in creation... God established him in his friendship CCC 355 It is in Christ, the image of the invisible God, that man has been created in the image and likeness of the creator. It is in Christ, Redeemer and Saviour, that the divine image, disfigured in man by the first sin, has been restored to its original beauty and ennobled by the grace of God CCC 1701

Genesis 1:27 God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him. Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the unseen God, the first-born of all creation

The Dignity of the Human Person CCC 357 We are not just something we are someone! We are capable of self knowledge, self possession and freely able to give ourselves and enter into communion with other persons CCC 358 God created everything for man, but man in turn was created to serve and love God and to offer all creation back to him

CCC 359 (Gaudium et Spes 22) In reality it is only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the Mystery of man truly becomes clear

2. A unity of body and soul

CCC 355:In his own nature, man unites the spiritual and material worlds. CCC363:Soul the innermost aspect of man; that which is of greatest value in him that by which he is most especially in God’s image the SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE in man CCC364:Body The human body shares in the dignity of the image of God The whole human being is called to be a “temple of the Holy Spirit.”

Form and Matter, Soul and Body; the Rational Soul CCC 365:“The unity of soul and body is so profound that the soul must be considered as the form of the body: i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living, human body.” “Spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature.” CCC 366:“Every spiritual soul is created immediately by God” and is immortal CCC 367:“Soul”/”Spirit” CCC 368:“Heart”

Signs and Symbols CCC 1145:The meaning of signs and symbols is rooted in the work of creation human culture the Old Covenant the Person and the work of Christ CCC 1146:Human Signs Man, being both soul and body, perceives spiritual realities through physical signs and symbols Man is a social being Needs signs and symbols in order to communicate with one another: language, symbols, gestures The same is true for his relationship with God.

CCC 1152-1155:The Sacraments The Sacraments include both language and actions. The Liturgy of the Word is an integral part of Liturgical celebrations. Word and action are inseparable “Performative speech” CCC 1156-1158Singing and music CCC 1159-1162Artwork and images The Word became visible, so we can make images; but the image still points to the eternal, transcendent, reality.

3. Male and female

Male and Female  Persons – Called to communion with God who is Communion of Persons and with each other  “God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves… God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.” Gen 1: 27  Unity of body and soul – This communion is expressed through the body, sign of an invisible reality  “The Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep. And while he slept, he took one of his ribs and enclosed it in flesh. The Lord God built the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. The man exclaimed: ‘This at last is bone from my bones, and flesh from my flesh! This is to be called woman, for this was taken from man.’ This is why a man leaves his father and mother and joins himself to his wife, and they become one body.” Gen 2:21-24

“It is only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of man truly becomes clear” GS 22  “have you not read that the creator from the beginning made them male and female and that he said: This is why a man must leave his father and mother, and cling to his wife, and the two become one body? They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then what God has united, man must not divide.” Matthew 19:4-5  “This mystery has many implications; but I am saying it applies to Christ and the Church. To sum up; you too, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wife respect her husband.” Ephesians 5: 32-33

St John Paul II – Theology of the Body  “…the concept of “image of God,” we can deduce that man became the image of God not only through his own humanity, but also through the communion of persons, which man and woman form from the very beginning…Man becomes an image of God not so much in the moment of solitude as in the moment of communion.” St John Paul II, (TOB 9:3)

Mary, Virgin and Mother, you who, moved by the Holy Spirit, welcomed the word of life in the depths of your humble faith: as you gave yourself completely to the Eternal One, help us to say our own “yes” to the urgent call, as pressing as ever, to proclaim the good news of Jesus. Mother of the living Gospel, wellspring of happiness for God’s little ones, pray for us. Amen. Alleluia!
