9 Healthcare in the US A much different and seemingly larger problem in the United States The U.S. spends a lot of money on healthcare  But does not have universal healthcare Healthcare has been a main debate among Republicans and Democrats during Obama’s duration as president!  Republicans: private healthcare  Democrats: less privatization will lead to more coverage

12 The Affordable Care Act Passed March 23, 2010 Often called “Obamacare” because it was a part of his plan, Democrats supported it Aims to solve long-term problems with healthcare in the U.S.  Millions of people are uninsured  People who have insurance tend to pay more for it than they would in other industrialized countries Aims to make affordable insurance more available Progressive changes  Many people will not be affected  Creates a marketplace online where people can see their insurance options

14 Biggest health issues facing US and UK Industrialized countries are facing longer life expectancies  Which means chronic diseases like cancer are going up  Treating them effectively and inexpensively is a major issue Obesity  UK has highest obesity rates in Europe  Costs to economy: 3 billion pounds a year  In the US, childhood obesity has doubled in past 30 years  12-19 year-olds=21% obese  Type 2 diabetes
