4 ILLINOIS HISTORY First Europeans were Joliet and Marquette – 1673 After French and Indian War Illinois was British After Revolution it became a territory 1818 admitted to the Union Grew East to West first, but with the completion of Erie Canal in 1825 the Great Lakes became a center of transportation

THE OLIVE BRANCH SYMBOLIZES PEACE. THE PLAINS OF ILLINOIS ARE REPRESENTED BY THE PRAIRIE AND RISING SUN. THE DATES ON THE ROCK IS WHEN ILLINOIS WAS ADMITTED TO THE UNION (1818) AND WHEN THE SEAL WAS ADOPTED (1868). THE FLAG WAS ADOPTED IN 1915.
