2 o “Crisis” care limited to psychiatric urgent care models or hospitals o Focus of crisis care is medication o Even symptom management is limited o Long waits at urgent care o 40-45% of those at urgent care do not need clinical services o But they need some type of attention

3 o Early intervention to prevent crisis o Peer-run program, one-on-one o Based on Intentional Peer Support o Creating a plan o Narrative model No focus on symptoms Examines life circumstances Creates a plan to meet needs Connects with other resources

4 o Shared risk/responsibility o At the beginning o Worldview o Thinking about the meaning of “crisis” o Mutuality o What does “help” look like? o Moving Toward o Utilizing strengths, talents o Creating a plan o Involving community members

6 o A theory used in peer support (Intentional Peer Support, RST) o Focuses on the “story” the person tells about his/her experience o Examines how each person makes meaning of an experience o Puts power over what happens next squarely in the person’s hands o Not an argument about causation but a technique designed to empower people o Developed in NZ & Australia

7  Most people come in asking for help to get into the hospital  Approximately 95% of people leave Hope’s Door with a plan adequate to stay out of the hospital  Many people return to Randy to follow up  Less cost, less time lost, stronger relationships

8 o What resources are available in your area? o Is peer support training available? o Is space available with a private office and no direct oversight? o Is there adequate supervision consistent with the theoretical model? o Training available: o Recovery Support training from Recovery Empowerment Network o Intentional Peer Support from Shery Mead/Ann Rider o Workbooks available for review
