Why do we cite sources?  In groups of 3, brainstorm your ideas  Each group will be asked to share an idea (must be different from the other groups)

What do these signs mean?

We know what these signs mean because they are international symbols. They have the same meaning regardless of where you go.

Similarly, when you write an essay for history, political science, geography and even biology it is important that you follow a set of guidelines. There are three main types: MLA, APA and Chicago Style. See the comparison chart

For history you will use: The Chicago Manual of Style

There are two main parts: 1Footnotes/Endnotes (You will indicate where you have found your quotes or “proofs” in your essay) 2The Bibliography (lists all of the resources you have used).

Why do we use it? To let readers know where you found your information. It is like an address on a map! To prevent plagiarism To maintain consistency in how everyone writes

Exercise One: Examine the sample essay. Complete the questions on the handout. Be prepared to share your answers with the class.

Welcome to your Chicago Style Guide! Keep it safe and refer to it often as you write your essays!
