2. Just the Beginning O Miles College was founded in 1898 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (Now the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, also known as the C.M.E. Church) O The college was named after Bishop William H. Miles O The college is still supported by and affiliated with the CME church O Originally located in Thomasville O Moved to Fairfield, AL in the Spring of 1907

3. Bishop William H. Miles Born a Slave in 1828 CME Church licensed him to preach in 1857 Elected Bishop in 1870 Saw the church as a source of spiritual solace for freed slaves Was a central figure in the CME church until his death in 1892. Miles College is named in his honor.

6. A First... O Williams Hall became the first college building completed on the campus in 1907 O Williams Hall was named after Bishop R.R. Williams, the presiding CME bishop in Alabama O It has served as the administration building, the women’s dormitory and the home of the economics classes. O Williams Hall is currently closed and awaiting renovations
